The Greatest American Hero was a superhero TV show with both comedic and dramatic elements. Given the inclusion of both comedic and dramatic elements, it should come as no surprise to learn that its name might have been a bit overblown, seeing as how the titular character was far from being the more impressive figure cut by his counterparts from more serious superhero media. In fact, Ralph Hinkley was a substitute teacher who acquired his superpowers when some aliens handed him a super powered suit, which would have been nice if it wasn’t for the fact that he lost not just the first but also the second instruction manual given to him. As a result, Ralph had to learn his wide range of superpowers on his own through the tried and true combination of trial and error, which made for some rather hilarious moments over the course of the TV show.
In total, The Greatest American Hero consisted of 45 episodes separated into three seasons that ran from 1981 to 1983. As a result, it can be said that it met with a fair amount of success, which was sufficient for there to have been a comic book series as well as an attempt to produce a new TV show based on a female lead. More recently, there was news in 2014 that a pilot for a new TV show based on the original had been ordered by Fox. However, that seems to have fallen through, seeing as how there is now plans for a new reboot by a new set of people on ABC.
What Can We Expect from the Reboot of The Greatest American Hero?
The new reboot is being headed by Rachna Fruchbom and Nahnatchka Khan, who have worked on a number of media projects in the past. Given that there was once an attempt to launch a spin-off of the original TV show with a female lead, it should come as no surprise to learn that the new reboot will have a female lead as well. However, the more interesting news is that the titular character will be an Indian-American woman named Meera, whose most notable talents happen to karaoke and being able to handle her tequila. In other words, it seems probable that the new reboot will have both the comedic and the dramatic elements of the original TV show.
At this point in time, it is still much too soon to speculate at length about the new reboot of The Greatest American Hero. In fact, it is even uncertain whether the new reboot will be called The Greatest American Hero or The Greatest American Heroine like the potential spin-off that failed to get off of the ground. Regardless, there are reasons to believe that the new reboot has potential, with examples ranging from the recent popularity of superhero media to the fair amount of love that existed for the original TV show once upon a time. However, it remains to be seen whether the new reboot will be able to capitalize on that potential. Suffice to say that there is a long way before it will be able to make it onto the TV screen, meaning that there are plenty of ways for it to trip and fall before reaching that much-coveted point.
