Tess Haubrich left a successful career as a model working with such haute couture labels as Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood and Celine even though she enjoyed the modeling industry immensely. She had always hope to act, and decided that she wanted her work acting to be taken seriously. Though she was once a newcomer with the role of Shandi in the soap opera Home and Away, she now has had the significant role of Private Rosenthal in blockbuster Alien: Covenant and Bleeding Steel; Jackie Chan’s new action comedy.
Tess is a hometown girl from the suburb of Mona Vale and attended Pittwater High. It’s part of Sydney and the Northern Beaches area. She lives close to Warriewood Beach, and enjoys spending time near the water. It’s not surprising that this Aussie girl has splashed into the public eye.
Tess went out and had a few drinks when she got the call that she was chosen for Alien: Covenant.
She was very surprised. She’s been a fan of Sigourney Weaver since the first Alien movie. The moment was shocking for her. She said it’s so common to go to many auditions and not bet the part, that this one was really amazing. She feels honored to be part of the franchise and to work with director Ridley Scott. She said that he is a real actor’s director, because he was completely open to her ideas and made her and her cast members feel completely comfortable.
Tess said she “summoned her inner teenager” when filming Drowning.
She portrayed Phaedra, believing that Phaedra was just feeling scared and alone while everyone else in her world viewed her as a “sexy minx”. Tess said that Phaedra had everything “on the outside”, including the looks, the fancy house and things people feel are important. But Tess viewed Phaedra has part of a story of how friends learn to stick with each other through the long run. She said that Phaedra just needed to be loved, as Tess herself felt when she was a teenager. The short film, directed by Craig Boreham, was filled with the excitement of being a teenager, while trying to figure out who to be close to and what will happen with life. Boreham casted Tess because she was “quite a bombshell”. Tess was attracted to the film because it was an intriguing story about teenagers.
Tess relaxes with yoga and playing her saxophone during her time off.
After portraying Shandi in the film Home and Away, Tess took some time away from filming and went to Los Angeles for some auditions. She spent about a year and a half leave from acting. She returned to Sydney and had her baby girl Juniper there. Three months later, she auditioned for Alien: Covenant, which became her next big role. While she relaxes the most with yoga, she also enjoys being with her friends to have lunch and coffee, too.
Tess only joined Instagram recently because her publicity girl told her she should.
Tess told The Daily Telegraph that she plans to post only about her work, but not her family. In the June 2017 article, she noted that her daughter Juniper is nearly two years old now, so she will keep her family life private. She’s married to Nicolas Gell, theater actor. Tess loves taking on various acting roles and becoming another person. She says that she feels she’s really not good with social media.
Her dream roles include playing strong women who are vulnerable.
Tess says her perfect roles would be similar to Charlize Theron’s character in Monster, Halle Berry’s character in Monster’s Ball, or films like Thelma and Louise or Pulp Fiction. Her move from modeling to the often dark and horrifying world of science fiction suits her well. Once a blonde teenage model, this now dark-haired beauty is being aligned with Sigourney Weaver. Tess, a fan of Weaver, and sci fi in general, is thrilled to be a part of the latest film in the franchise. She’s also enjoyed her much publicized stunt work with Jackie Chan atop of the Sydney Opera House.
