Stunts are often dangerous things on movie sets. They require a trained professional to accomplish them and a team of people making good and sure that those stunt people are able to hit their mark when its time. If a stunt goes wrong there’s a good chance that people will get seriously hurt, but eventualities are planned for on a regular basis. The only thing that can’t always be planned for is an accident that no one saw coming. These do happen and they can cost people their lives sometimes. It’s the worst part of any movie when an individual actually does pay that final price. That’s a big part of why stunt people deserve an overwhelming amount of respect.
With all due respect to the fallen.
5. Harry O’Connor – XXX
O’Connor was a retired Navy Seal and had done this stunt once before to success. This is one of those times that it should have been one and done. The director has gone on to say that there were 500 stunt people used in the movie, and 499 of them came away without a scratch. It’s a testament to how careful most teams are, but a perfect track record is not always possible.
4. Art Scholl – Top Gun
More frustrating than the failure of the stunt and the life taken in effect is the fact that some stunts offer no set explanation as to why they occurred. During the stunt Art simply said that he had a problem, but there was no further explanation. Nothing was recovered of the crash, leaving many people to wonder just what went wrong. It was stunt he’d done before, but there is no way to tell what happened.
3. Kun Liu – Expendables 2
Kun Liu was performing a stunt for Sylvester Stallone when a planned explosion went wrong and killed him. Another stunt man that was in the scene with him was gravely injured. Not long after the investigation the family of Kun Liu and the other stuntman filed charges against Sylvester Stallone for wrongful death and damages.
2. Chris Lamon – Exit Wounds
Chris was performing a stunt in which he had to jump from an upside down van and land on his feet. The problem was that somehow his footing slipped and he ended up landing on his head on the pavement. He suffered multiple skull fractures and passed away not too long after.
1. Joi “SJ” Harris – Deadpool 2
Joi is the latest stunt person to be counted as a casualty of the stunt industry. She was doing a stunt to fill in for the character of Domino and was not wearing a helmet. The worst part of this is that she had already performed the stunt three or four times to success. On the next attempt however she lost control and was flung from the bike through a plate glass window. She was treated on site but passed away soon after.
Stunt people have dangerous jobs, there is no other way to say it. They understand the risks going in and know very well that they could be injured or even killed at any time if a stunt goes wrong. To the fallen we say that those in this profession have earned their respect.
