Wise Hassan is a thriller by Palestinian filmmaker Tawfik Abu Wael, whose other works were [easyazon_link identifier=”B00SYKVO2Q” locale=”US” tag=”tvovermind00a-20″]Thirst[/easyazon_link] in 2004 and Last Days in Jerusalem in 2011. Given its name, it should come as no surprise to learn that the movie is centered around a man named Hassan. However, chances are high that most people would not be able to guess even the general outlines of its content.
Hassan is a Palestinian man who wants to study mathematics overseas but lacks the means to do so. Since he has no real options, he is convinced to kill a man named Lulu who has been collaborating with the Israelis in Tel Aviv. As a result of his mission, Hassan is rather surprised when he learns that Lulu is a transgender woman working as a prostitute in the red light district centered around Tel Aviv’s central station. Much of the movie is focused on Hassan’s efforts to come to grips with this information as he falls in love with Lulu, while tension is maintained by the uncertainty of whether his newfound feelings will be enough to prevent him from following through on his initial intentions.
Why Should You Watch Wise Hassan?
Recently, Wise Hassan won the top prize at an Israeli film industry event called Pitch Point, which speaks well of its content. However, there are other reasons that people should consider giving the thriller a chance.
For example, the movie is the product of a different culture in a different setting than what most of us might be accustomed to. As a result, it could be an excellent chance for people who are interested in seeing how other people in other countries live their lives to take a somewhat indirect peek through the media inspired by their experiences. Something that could prove enriching in more than one sense of the word.
However, it should also be noted that the inclusion of LGBT+ characters in media is something that should be promoted. After all, the inclusion of LGBT+ characters in media can promote the acceptance of them by general society as more and more people realize that they are just people rather than distorted caricatures created by mistaken assumptions. The inclusion of transgender people in media is particularly important because transgender people are particularly at-risk for all sorts of serious problems. Suffice to say that this is horrific, meaning that something needs to be done about it. Furthermore, considering the impact of the legalization of gay marriage on gay people, the potential solutions to this problem seem obvious, though judging by current circumstances, it seems probable that gains will not come without significant effort.
