It seems like for a while Aziz Ansari was on fire, and then he struggled to find his niche in Hollywood. Now it seems like he’s finally found his place and it’s as one of the greatest up and coming stars on the Netflix show Master of None. It doesn’t matter if you like him or not he’s been making quite a name for himself since the show aired in 2015. Anyone who’s been watching Ansari since his rise in the ranks knows that he is a genuinely funny person and is bringing new life to comedy that should be readily embraced. On top of that, he’s a skilled actor that knows how to make people feel for his character.
So why is Master of None the best show on Netflix? Here are a few reasons that might explain why.
Dev is a real character.
The show focuses on the real life of a character and not a fantastical tale that, while entertaining, is harder to relate to. Viewers can look at Dev and actually tell themselves, truthfully, that they’ve been there, done that. His relationships and the way in which he talks to the many people in his life come off as sincere and not canned in the way that some sitcoms do just to get a laugh. In other words, Dev is that person you might have been years ago before you realized what it meant to really grow up and take on as many responsibilities as you could.
He has a love-hate relationship with his phone that is entirely on par with the world of today.
As Dev would put it, most of the girls on his phone hate him, or he hates them. Yet when he puts his phone away life gets immeasurably harder because he has to deal with the actual world around him. Too many people these days face this same problem and it’s shown in the series that he kind of has some difficulty in relating to people simply because talking or texting on his phone is so much easier. When did this happen in society? At least Ansari gets it right and seems to portray the reaction of every person that’s disconnected from their phone for more than a few minutes.
Dev is a diverse character.
Unlike other comedians that might stick to one set act in their life or have characters that don’t have a lot of development outside their main role, Dev is the kind of guy that diversifies. He doesn’t just sit around on his phone, or mope about his messy love life, or even stick just to jokes about race or religion. He actually gets out and does stuff, like becoming a foodie and learning more about cooking and dining to satisfy one of his other main appetites. He doesn’t stray far from his comedic roots, but he definitely becomes a more well-rounded character as the series progresses and thus becomes far more enjoyable.
Ansari doesn’t seem to believe that there is enough material or plot to keep going for a season three, but there are many that believe he’s very wrong about this. The second course has been served, it’s time to move onto the next helping.
