5 Things You Didn’t Know about TLC Show “I am Jazz”

The TLC original show entitled “I Am Jazz” has proven to be quite popular over the last couple of years, not to mention one of the most popular shows that raise awareness about being transgender. If you are a devoted fan of the show, you probably already know a lot about not only the television show itself, but about the people involved. However, if you have only seen the show a couple of times, you might be wondering how you can find out more information. Below are five things that you may not know about the show, yet all of these things are vitally important to the shows existence.

Keep reading to find out more.

1. Jazz knew she was a girl at just two years old

It’s possible that she even knew earlier than that, but it wasn’t until she was about two years old that she was able to articulate it to her parents. Born in a boy’s physical body, Jazz states that she has always known deep in her heart that she is a girl. As such, her parents made the decision to stand beside her from the beginning. She is even tried to raise awareness for other individuals that are also transgender, largely by appearing on talk shows, even at the tender age of six.

2. Jazz makes mermaid tails to help support other transgender youth

According to Jazz herself, she has always had a fascination with mermaids. She eventually developed a company where she creates beautiful mermaid tails that can be worn by human beings. She sells them online as a way to make money for a foundation that she created for transgender youth. Over the years, she has developed quite a presence on social media, thanks in large part to the mermaid tails. It is always interesting to see a young person stand up for what they believe in and then take action to do something about it.

3. Their Hometown isn’t mentioned

In an effort to protect the privacy of the family, their hometown isn’t mentioned. While they have previously stated that they live somewhere in Florida, that is about as detailed as it ever gets. It is easy to understand why, as there have been some extremely unkind messages that have been sent via email, social media and even telephone messages regarding Jazz being a transgender teen.

4. The family doesn’t use their real names

It is not really known whether or not the kids’ first names are their real names, but the parents don’t use their real names in the television show and the family’s last name is different. This was something that the family basically had to do in order to not only protect their own privacy, but to keep the family safe. As previously mentioned, Jazz has received death threats and people have lashed out at her repeatedly because she is transgender. As a direct result, the family really didn’t have a choice but to go by a different name if they were to get the word out about transgender youth and become the public figures that they currently are.

5. It all started to raise awareness

Everything that has happened is designed to raise awareness about transgender individuals. In fact, the television show itself has basically been born out of past interviews and social media posts. The television show provides another avenue to raise awareness about transgender individuals. This is especially true for individuals that might not have seen any of the interviews or don’t really participate in social media.
