Brie Larson was recently featured in a pretty sultry photoshoot for Vanity Fair which she admitted she was reluctant to do. With regards to her career, there’s another thing she was nearly reluctant to do as well: play the lead role in Captain Marvel. Larson is a huge star right now and some think that moving to the money making machine that is Marvel might be a bit of a “sell out” move but while money must have been a factor in her decision making process, it wasn’t the only factor.
“It took me a really long time,” Larson explained to Vanity Fair of her decision making process in taking the role. “I had to sit with myself, think about my life and what I want out of it. Ultimately, I couldn’t deny the fact that this movie is everything I care about, everything that’s progressive and important and meaningful, and a symbol I wished I would’ve had growing up. I really, really feel like it’s worth it if it can bring understanding and confidence to young women – I’ll do it.” Larson also explained that she felt she was cast because she has “many similarities” to Captain Marvel, and explained that Marvel Studios has so far been receptive to her ideas for the character.
Captain Marvel isn’t due out in theaters until March 8, 2019 so we have plenty of time to debate Larson’s motivation to do this film. While I think her answer is admirable I still can’t get a full read on Brie Larson. I’m curious if she’ll wind up being a “good” movie star or a “bad” movie star. Sometimes people say what reporters and cameras want to hear. And some are very adamant about specific issues. Larson hasn’t been on top very long and every actor knows at the blink of an eye you could get shunned by Hollywood. I think as much as she’s sincere about wanted to empower young women, millions of dollars and hanging onto stardom must have played into her decision process just as much as anything else.
