I’m not sure if any of you have ever worked as an extra but I can personally attest to having this experience. It was years ago but I was an extra on Law and Order as well as Oz. Unfortunately my scenes never made it into the shows but of all the acting work there is to be done, being an extra is the lowest of the low. You sit around for 8-12 hours pretty much doing nothing and you rarely if ever get to have your “moment in the sun.”
However, on occasion there is a scene in a movie with an extra that gets highly noticed. In fact it becomes internet fodder. For example, did you know that there’s a scene in Hulk Hogan’s classic Mr. Nanny where someone throws a cat in the water? Seriously. For no reason at all but it was captured on film. So while an extra is usually insignificant, occasionally these people completely fail at their jobs and it’s captured not only on film but makes the final cut of a movie.
