A Solution for Emma Watson, Amanda Seyfried and All Other Photo Scandal Victims

While I think it’s pretty disgusting that celebrities get hacked on a daily basis and their personal and intimate media of themselves gets leaked online, I can’t help but to think that there are a number of ways around this.  The latest victims of a hacking are Amanda Seyfriend and Emma Watson.  The two actresses are threatening legal action if private photos of themselves continue to get published online.   I personally think that regardless of their threats, these pictures are getting out there in some way, shape, or form.   We’ve seen this scenario too many times.

At the same time I can’t help but think that there’s a pretty easy solution to many of these issues.  Since celebrities know they are all targets of these malicious attempts at invading their privacy, shouldn’t they simply not use their phones or computers for any of these personal types of images and videos?  Have we forgotten that Kodak cameras still exist?  There’s such a thing as a video camera.  Those exist too.

I’m not suggesting that celebrities stop recording intimate moments with loved ones.  What they do in the privacy of their own homes or elsewhere is completely their business.  They have every right to pose however they want and share the photos with whomever they want.   However, if you take all opportunities for the hackers away (which in 99% of the cases is through a computer) you won’t have all of these issues.

At this point in society, every celebrity should be aware that they are a target and having a smartphone is a risk no matter what.  However, there are so many ways to avoid privacy becoming public if the celebrities were really serious about it.   While I think it sucks they’d have to go to such measures it’s important for them to recognize in the first place that this is simply the way it is.  When you’re that famous and in the public eye all the time, you’re immediately a target and you need to react as such.

Making a phone call?  Use a land line at home.  While it doesn’t eliminate all risk, it takes your smartphone out of the picture.  Want to take a photo?  Use a PHYSICAL camera, not your phone.  Want to take a video?  Use a video camera, put the video on your computer, then save it to a zip drive or memory card and then erase it from your computer entirely.   I understand these steps are going the extra mile, but isn’t it worth the 2 seconds of time to do these things rather than spend months fighting in court and being exposed to the public in ways that are undesirable?

I’m not saying celebrities want to get caught (some do) but I am saying there are 100% ways to prevent these things from happening in the first place or at least reducing the risk considerably.
