A new documentary entitled “The Internet Warriors” has been released and I’m still trying to digest the 20 minutes that just took place in my life. While I’m grateful that a film like this exists, it makes me that much more scared of the general public and realization of the lengths people will go validate themselves on the internet. As we go about our daily lives and post things on the internet, we occasionally get a comment or response from a person that’s unfavorable. Often times we don’t even know these people. These are the people that take time out of their day specifically to get a rise out of us. We call them “internet trolls.” But the issue of internet trolling runs far deeper and more dangerous than the minor situations we might encounter. According to The AV Club
The people we’d normally picture as an old-man avatar or a screaming anime character or a classic Twitter egg are visited here in their homes. We see the stacks of detritus that surround their old PCs and watch them eat meals in local diners. The international super-team of haters spans anti-EU activists, Trump train diehards, white nationalists, and many more. At first, it seems as though Lien wants to humanize these subjects; we see that one man hates the EU because of the financial burdens it caused for his wife to emigrate to live with him. We watch a man defend mass-murderer Anders Breivik, then pet his mom’s old dog, who he is now taking care of. It’s a rangy mutt that sort of looks like its new owner.
If you’re in the market for a true stomach churning look at the lives of internet trolls you may watch this film below. I must warn you that as much as it contains bad language, the sheer site of these people and their private lives is even more disturbing.
