Jane the Virgin Season 2 Episode 7 Review: “Chapter Twenty-Nine”

Jane the Virgin

After a six-month time jump, Jane the Virgin picks up at a time where the more our heroine tries to  live a normal life, the more hits she keeps taking

Absolutely nothing good can come from trying to be impressive at a party when you’ve had too much to drink. This is what makes Jane knock over a tray of food on the woman she is trying to convince to become her advisor. Not only has Jane completely shot her chances of getting her idol as her advisor, but  sneaky Wesley is there to witness the whole thing, reveling in all of the gossip he can get for his Solano expose. Jane tries to apologize, which actually works out given that she and the professor bond over both being new moms. Her advice to Jane is to make her writing more sparkly. Yeah, sparkles are for Disney princesses and bad TMZ stories.

Jane goes back to Professor Chavez once she realizes that his notes are actually helpful. The only problem is that Jane has burned that bridge with a drunkenly misplaced email in which she says some not so nice things about the good professor. Our Jane isn’t easily discouraged. She goes back to Professor Chavez to tell him she is going to take his next class because he will help make her a better writer. Rather than see her three times a week in class, Chavez agrees to take Jane on as an advisee, if only to see her just once a week. In the meantime sneaky Wesley tracks down Luisa to get as much dirt as he can out of her. What he does get is a secret Luisa herself didn’t know she possessed.

Petra could not be more in over her head, and this is the woman who has been in a lot of tight spots. Petra doesn’t have much experience making friends, but if anyone could use one, it’s her. After a sweet and successful Thanksgiving, Petra tries her hand at building a friendship with Jane. Each attempt, however, gets shot to hell as Petra is desperately trying to cover up the dead body in her bathtub. Not to worry, the sight of a pregnant Petra running around with buckets of ice from the vending machine gives the creepy situation some levity. Trying to get the body out of the hotel and into a grave becomes such a hard task that Petra has to be mean to Jane in order to avoid suspicion. This may be one of the saddest moments ever on Jane the Virgin, as you can see the genuine regret and sorrow on Petra’s face at having hurt Jane.

Xiomara submitted a theme song for Rogelio’s show and thinks he doesn’t want to use it. He finally works up to telling her the truth about the Cease and Desist order put on his show because of copyright issues with Mad Men. Rogelio goes to Hollywood to state his case for the order to be lifted and is rejected. With his show officially declared dead, Rogelio is forced to admit that he personally invested everything he had into the show. Jane and Xiomara immediately act as Rogelio’s financial advisors. Since he doesn’t approve of his new tight budget, Rogelio goes back to be a character on his old network and chooses a new one bedroom condo for himself. If that wasn’t enough to turn Rogelio’s frown upside down, Xiomara’s song gets chosen for Rogelio’s rival Esteban’s show. Rogelio manages to screw up that deal, and in order to get Xiomara’s dream back for her, he swallows his pride and does a humiliated guest spot on Esteban’s show.

Jane the Virgin finally provides us some information on what happened the six months Michael was gone in Mexico. He traveled there with Nadine only to see her shot and killed by a bullet that was meant for him. The truth is Michael has actually been undercover this whole time gathering information on who kidnapped Luisa. His clues lead him to the “Mutter” that has been talked about in the last few Jane the Virgin episodes. Given that Luisa has her mother’s casket opened and it is empty, I think we have found our new evil villain.

Rafael is officially apart of the family regardless of when he and Jane have their date. He’s included in the annual Villanueva tradition of Black Friday, where the women mean business. Any excitement the day could have brought is extinguished when Jane runs into Michael at Target. Rafael knows that he has to move fast to get Jane out on their first date. Babysitter Chepa is more than experienced and qualified and plans on speaking Spanish to Mateo so that he can be bilingual. Rafael has to actually pull Jane out of the room so that they can go on their date. He actually does a pretty good job at setting the mood when he takes her to a white-picket fence house he is considering buying. All seems to be going well until Rafael is slammed with the news that Wesley has released a tell-all article about the Solanos. Then Jane is slammed with an equally devastating truth: Rafael has been lying to her. He was behind Michael’s bosses finding out he let Nadine go, paying someone to go in his stead to report Michael. It’s all Jane needs to walk right out the door.

What will Jane do next in the wake of this betrayal?
