It’s been a great season of The Goldbergs so far, and if history is any indication about this show, it will continue to stay consistent throughout the year. Let’s see how things help up in this week’s episode, “Boy Barry.”
The main story in “Boy Barry” deals with Barry trying to impress his girlfriend Lainey. To mess with Barry, Lainey and Erica try to convince him that what it’ll take to keep Lainey’s heart is for him to become a clone of Boy George. He completely revamps his look for her, but he finds out that it was all a way to get him to realize his insecurity. When he does, though, he breaks up with Lainey. Needless to say, that’s not what she wanted to happen. To win back her boyfriend, Erica convinces Lainey to do something big and embarrassing for him. She raps for him at school, thinking that he’ll like it, but the plan backfires as the rest of the school thinks she’s making fun of him. Barry becomes further convinced that Lainey is out of his league. Erica finally intervenes, though, and Barry and Lainey realize how much they really mean to each other.
Elsewhere, Beverly has decided that she hates Murray’s friendship with Bill, Lainey’s dad. After Bill convinces Murray to grow a Tom Selleck mustache, Beverly decides to try and change Bill. This doesn’t work, though, so she shaves the mustache off in the night. The three try to talk the friendship out, but it ends with Beverly getting her way and splitting up the two friends. Erica helps Beverly realize that it’s important that Murray has someone else important in his life, and she makes things better for the two.
“Boy Barry” was another great episode in a really solid season of The Goldbergs. Barry and Erica have gotten an increased focus this season, and I think that it’s turned out for the better. I really also liked Lainey’s role in this episode, furthering my belief that AJ Michalka is a fantastic addition to the main cast.
Other Thoughts/Favorite Quotes:
- Pops’ hatred of barbershop quartets was great, and I’d love to see him go on more rants about music genres.
- PLEASE let Jeff and Erica get in a relationship. I absolutely love the chemistry between these two, and I’d love for them to be able to interact even more.
- “It’s so soft.”
- I could be wrong, but I think this is the first episode that didn’t have Adam in a big role. Surprisingly, I really appreciated this change of pace. The entire Goldberg family is the main focus of the show, and it was refreshing to see stories that didn’t involve him directly.
- Beverly was delightful in her Charlie’s Angels costume, and I’d be okay if she dresses in a different costume in every episode.
- The tag with Adam’s prank on Barry was really fun.
