The third season of The Goldbergs has managed to produce some of the series’ best episodes so far in its first two weeks by delivering realistic family stories with heartfelt character interaction. Let’s take a look at this week’s entry, “Jimmy 5 Is Alive.”
The primary story in “Jimmy 5 Is Alive” is Adam asking Murray to help him build a robot. He’s reluctant, but Adam gets Beverly involved. Of course, things don’t happen like Adam hoped, and he and Murray are forced to build one out of junk around the house. Pops tries to help them come up with a plan, and the idea of making a weather robot is something that manages to get both Adam and Murray on board. They, as usual, have a falling out, but after realizing how much it means to his son, Murray buys Adam the “robutt” he wanted, and they share a really great bonding experience while enjoying things they both love.
Elsewhere in the episode, Barry makes one of the ultimate ’80s mistakes in accidentally recording over Beverly’s tape of his fifth birthday party. He enlists the help of Coach Meller, but he only makes things worse. He comes up with what he thinks is the greatest plan in the world in framing Beverly for the mistake, but this only sends her into a deep spiral. After coming clean to his mom about what happened, she ends up understanding the importance of building up your children, allowing her to let go just a tad of the past while still cherishing the memories.
“Jimmy 5 Is Alive” had some of the best moments of the series between both Adam and Erica and Adam and Murray, furthering my belief that The Goldbergs is among the best family comedies ever. It’s almost crazy just how solid The Goldbergs has been so far this season, and I can’t wait to see more in the weeks to come.
Other Thoughts/Favorite Quotes:
- I don’t know if it really means much, but Erica was spending a little bit of time with Barry’s friends in the beginning of the episode. After the moment Erica and Jeff had at the end of last week’s episode, I’m hoping that this is a storyline we’ll get to see a lot more of this season. Those characters have an uncanny amount of chemistry, and I’d love to see their friendship/relationship mature.
- Murray’s love of TV weather is one of the most realistic dad-things that’s ever been on this show, and I loved it.
- “It’s a learning-based project!”
- Bryan Callen is great as always as Coach Meller. Just like when Tim Robbins makes an appearance, Callen is always a major highlight no matter how many or how few scenes he has.
- Pops again! This season has given us a good amount of fun Pops scenes already, so here’s hoping that trend keeps up.
- The way Murray pronounces “robot” is something that just about everyone can relate to from their childhood.
- The robot cursing made me laugh way more than it should have.
