As we inch closer to the end of the first season of Grace and Frankie, it’s clear that the narrative drive to the finish line will be Robert and Sol’s upcoming wedding. The previous episode got the divorce itself out of the way (while revealing a ton of great backstory), so it’s time now to press on toward the anticipated event with “The Secrets.”
The episode begins with Frankie expressing that it’s a bit of an inconvenience to her that Guy is at the house every single morning. It’s a bit hard for her to get used to a man being around in hers (and Grace’s) life after everything that happens, and she tries to convince Grace that maybe she’s going a bit too fast with this new relationship. Grace admits that it was possibly a rebound relationship in the beginning, but she thinks that it’s actually turned into something real. Later on, she is surprised in the kitchen by the art student of Frankie’s that kissed her a few episodes back. She thinks that he’s there to try and rekindle their brief spark, but it turns out that he is just telling her goodbye. Unfortunately, the conversations ends with a passionate kiss that Frankie accidentally spies. Frankie is livid with Grace for keeping it from her, and it leads to a conversation between the two where they decide that they’re now close enough friends that they can talk about things like that.
Meanwhile, Robert and Sol are in the middle of planning for their approaching wedding. While they test out appetizers from a few different caterers, Sol gets a phone call from his ex-wife in which she tells him Grace’s new secret. Sol, of course, tells Robert about the kiss, but Robert seems more okay with it than expected, leading Sol to believe that Robert may not have been completely faithful to him during their long courtship. Sol ends up confronting Robert about this, and Robert reveals that he was briefly with someone else years ago while they were broken up. The two of them end up fighting, and Robert accidentally reveals to Grace over the phone that he knows about the kiss. Grace, correctly, blames Frankie for revealing her secret, and the two end up in an argument about friendship. Unfortunately for everyone, Guy walks in at the wrong time and overhears the conversation.
Robert finally tells Sol who with whom he had a fling, and it turns out that it’s one of the caterers that’s currently in their kitchen. Robert and Sol end up having a talk about the nature of their relationship, and they realize that nothing else matters now that they are together. Frankie and Grace, meanwhile, end up trying to explain the situation to Guy, but he is clearly saddened by the news. He shows back up later on, though, and he realizes that he was so bothered because he’s falling in love with Grace.
“The Secrets” also had a great storyline involving Brianna’s new relationship that cleverly weaves in Bud and Coyote, and it really goes to show how great this cast has become. Maybe they’ve just grown on me by this point in the season, but everyone seems to be able to hold their own better than I ever anticipated after the show’s very slow start. Everything on Grace and Frankie is working really well now, and it’s really a gift to experience.
