The Voice Season 8 Episode 26 Review: “Live Semi-Final Results”

The Voice

While this season of The Voice has had a few twists and turns, the most notable being Kimberly Nichole’s elimination, it’s been rather obvious since the early rounds that certain contestants would be in the final four. Week after week, Sawyer Fredericks and Meghan Linsey came out and gave it their all, wowing their coaches and America while winning our hearts and votes. The other two open spots in the finale were more in flux, with certain contestants amazing us one week while flopping the next. But after landing in the bottom of the pack the past two weeks and paling in comparison to the others contestants, it was once again obvious which contestant would be sent home last night.

Mixed in with the results were some fun performances by the Top 5, as first the girls and then the boys took the stage. It’s been evident all season that, overall, the girls are stronger this year, with Sawyer Fredericks being the only real standout among the boys. Both groups entertained with their performances, but they also proved that the girls really are more impressive. We also heard from Walk the Moon and Snoop Dogg and Pharrell during the results show, with performances that were actually less interesting than those of the contestants. Perhaps it’s because the Top 5 have gotten so used to singing live, but they sounded much better than the seasoned performers.

After hearing these performances, as well as learning interesting tidbits about the contestants (Sawyer can name all his horses and Joshua can juggle!), it was time to get serious about the results. Earlier in the night, Carson announced, to no one’s surprise, that Sawyer and Meghan were safe. A bit later, he revealed the first person in the bottom two this week, once again shocking no one by calling India’s name. It was down to Koryn and Joshua, either of who could easily have landed in the bottom this week. Overall, Koryn has grown a lot more than Joshua, so I was anticipating him to be in the bottom. America had other ideas, though, as Koryn took her place next to India, and both girls prepared to sing for their lives.

Despite the disappointment of landing in the bottom two, Koryn gave it her all in her performance, knowing that this is what she’d have to do to get the instant save. She delivered with another emotional and compelling performance that once again showed her growth as a singer. India was no stranger to the instant save performance, but it got away from her this week, as her riffing and vibrato distracted from the power of the song she chose. America recognized this with the instant save, sending Koryn to the finale and at long last sending India home. She made it as far in the competition as she could, even beating out a few singers that maybe deserved it more. In the end, this was India’s time to go, and I’m glad to see that America got it right. The finale should be a close one, although  I’ve got my money on Sawyer to take it all.
