Regardless of whether or not you like a contestant and think they should advance, it’s always difficult to see someone sent home. The further they go in the competition, the more you get to know them, making it even more difficult to watch as their journey on The Voice ends. Last night, we had to say goodbye to eight contestants, two from each team, as America and the coaches picked the three who would continue on. For the most part, the correct decisions were made, but that didn’t make it any easier to watch those who didn’t quite make the cut.
Blake’s team was the first to find out who would make it through, but before those results came in, Chris Jamison from last season and Wiz Khalifa took the stage for a great performance. Not having seen last season, I was pleasantly surprised at how talented Chris Jamison is. We also got to hear each team sing together before the results were announced, showcasing how they stacked up against each other.
It was no surprise that the member of Blake’s team who got the most votes was Corey Kent White, who is the only country singer in the competition and already has an army of girls behind him. Meghan Linsey also made it through, rightfully so, as she has been consistently the best on his team. Blake had to choose between the three remaining contestants, ultimately picking Hannah Kirby to move on. I would have liked to see Brooke Adee advance instead, as I’m not a big fan of Hannah’s shouty performances, which are overshadowed by her dance moves.
Team Christina was next up, performing together and being featured in a montage to promote a program that Starbucks is running. Eventually, we got to what really matters: the eliminations, as Kimberly Nichole and India Carney unsurprisingly made it through on America’s vote. It was a no-brainer for Christina to advance Rob Taylor as well, as the obvious three best members of her team made it to the Top 12. Sonic and Lexi Davila seem like nice people, but in the end, they stood no chance against the other three.
Pharrell’s team was next up with another impressive group performance, showing that the teams really work well together. Once again, it was no surprise to see Sawyer Fredericks and Mia Z advance, both of whom are incredibly talented and have been fan favorites throughout the competition. Personally, I was hoping to see Caitlin Caporale join the Top 12, but it really was the better decision for Pharrell to advance the more popular Koryn Hawthorne. Luck finally ran out for Lowell Oakley as well, as Pharrell could only save him so many times.
Rounding out the show, Team Adam took the stage with the weakest group performance of the night. He clearly has the worst team at this point, and the only contestant I really wanted to see go through from his team was Joshua David. Thankfully, America agreed with me as he got the most votes to advance. Deanna Johnson was also voted through by America after getting the last spot the previous night, which almost guarantees advancement. Realistically, she’s probably the second best on Adam’s team and deserved to make it to the Top 12. Adam went with Brian Johnson as his third team member to advance, who I find incredibly boring and dull. If Nathan Hermida had been given a better song the night before, he would have been the much better choice.
Regardless of whether or not you agree with the results, the Top 12 this season has been determined. They’ll all take the stage next week with America completely in control of who advances the rest of the season. Each team has at least one strong contestant, but if I had to guess right now, I’d say either Blake or Pharrell have the best shot at winning this season of The Voice.
