Last night’s The Mindy Project was another unforgettable Christmas episode. Rumors spread online before it even aired that Danny and Mindy might be getting engaged. Thankfully that wasn’t the case. Not that I don’t want them to be together forever and have all the babies Mindy envisions for them, but it would have happened for all the wrong reasons.
Mindy’s professional life has long been overshadowed by her romantic entanglements. Besides the fact that she’s in a stable relationship with the crushworthy Danny, Mindy’s worth as a doctor finally being recognized is my favorite aspect of this season thus far. I loved that she wasn’t going to put a fellowship in Stanford on the backburner just because it would mean she’d be away from Danny for eight months.
Granted, it did initially seem like she was only going to apply for it because she thought he was ready to propose. (By the way, I totally called early on that Forever Stone charge on Danny’s statement was for a cemetery plot!) Why Danny even listened to Peter about a stupid “proposal trap” is beyond me. Annette talked some real sense into him when she told him to give Mindy what she really needs: a final recommendation letter for the fellowship. Danny’s response to his Ma offering such great advice that he would marry her if he could was funny but definitely borderline creepy. Her response to tell him to stop being so weird was even better! I’m glad the writers know there’s a line between Mama’s boy and Norman and Norma Bates territory.
“Christmas” marked Julia Stiles’ first guest starring appearance as Jessica, a doctor friend that Danny set up with Peter but through a classic case of mistaken identity, she ended up with Morgan. Where was Tamra though? I would’ve loved to see her reaction to Morgan’s new love interest. Strangely Jessica seems like a better fit for Morgan than Tamra ever did. Her hoarding feels like a natural fit for Morgan’s wacky lifestyle.
Rob McElhenney returned briefly as Lou, Morgan’s cousin and date for the office Christmas party. Hopefully he pops up more often because he’s always good comic relief when it comes to the more awkward encounters between characters.
I also can’t go without mentioning Beverly! Her outlandish behavior was hilarious as per usual. When Jeremy locked her in a closet so as to keep her from embarrassing the doctors at their “elegant” Christmas party, I was a little disappointed but luckily she got out of there just in time to blow Morgan’s facade as Peter in front of Jessica.
There was a time jump to two weeks later, where we saw Mindy got accepted into the fellowship. This will be interesting to see all the new people she’ll be working with in California. It’s opening the doors to all new characters and storylines which is exciting. I’m confident that she and Danny will survive these months apart, and maybe this will all end with a proposal when she returns home to New York!
