Tonight’s Fringe was, for me, slightly disappointing. While the buildup to the monster of the week was incredibly well-done, the payoff was lackluster, and left me wanting much more than what we got, which looked like a cheap knockoff of Guillermo del Toro’s creatures.
The episode starts off with Olivia getting out of the hospital, though she’s apparently suffering side-effects, the most dominant of which is an enhanced case of hearing. Broyles is worried about Olivia’s competency, but Peter reassures him that she’ll be fine.
Peter chooses a case from Pennsylvania, in which several people have vanished “out of thin air.” Against the wishes of the sheriff’s department, Olivia, Peter, and Walter travel to Pennsylvania to investigate, where they eventually meet a man who visited several family members of the victims. Checking his history, they find out that he lost a wife and child in childbirth. However, when the caskets of the deceased are exhumed, only the wife’s corpse remains — the baby apparently dug down through the bottom of the casket and escaped.
The baby, whose genetic makeup was changed by his scientist father to include that of a scorpion, is responsible for the killings. He is soon located by Olivia and Peter, and after a brutal underground battle, the mutant is crushed by a police car when it tries to burrow out under the vehicle.
Meanwhile, the artist formerly known as Charlie is conspiring against Olivia, and is ordered by Mr. Mirrorhands to forcefully discover the information she can’t remember, though Nina Sharp suggests to Olivia that she goes to see Sam Weiss, an enigmatic man who “helped” Nina overcome the psychological ramifications of her cancer. Weiss seems to know what Olivia is experiencing, and warns that she’ll soon start having headaches.

I'm having trouble believing that Dunham doesn't recognize fake Charlie pretty quickly. If they really are that close, it should be obvious to her.
I thought the monster was a little cliche, but that's okay. I prefer to focus on the over-arching mythology of the show anyway, and even though it wasn't a prevalent part of the episode, it was still compelling.
So what about Olivia's "symptoms?" Are these simply by-products of having traveled between dimensions, or is it something native to Olivia that has been awakend? Who is this Sam guy, and why am I already willing to think he is cool as hell even though he's only been around for 2 minutes?
Still not sure about the new chick. Agent Jessup. Isn't that her name? She didn't do much this episode, but I'm really wondering why she is always surrounded by Christian symbols. In last night's episode, she walks in to Hughes' house and within 60 seconds she is framed by three different crosses on the walls, finds another cross in the cabinet and a bible. What's going on here?
I'm starting to get the feeling that the show has been somewhat of a mislead. That's a good thing. Think about LOST – the first season was mostly people on an island with a few odd things thrown in. Jump forward five years and we have smoke monsters, electromagnets, shape shifters, time travel, Egyptian statues, etc. Season one was a tiny tip of a huge iceberg, the nature of which we still don't fully understand.
I'm thinking Fringe will go this way as well. Bring in the non-hardcore sci-fi fans with a slightly odd procedural and slowly morph it into pure sci-fi mytholgy based storytelling. I know people who watch LOST, got hooked in the first season, but if you could tell them five years ago they would love a show about time travel, etc. they would have laughed at you.
This is the genius of Mr. Abrams.

There was good stuff in the episode, but nothing spectacular. There seems to be lots of storylines that are going to collide sometime this season: Agent Jessup's Bible thing, Walter stealing Peter, Olivia's trip, Charlie's replacement, Fringe Division getting more resources. Full review of the episode.

And how awesome is it to name a character "Sheriff Golightly?"
