Beyond Ted Kaczynski’s reign of terror, Janus Metz Pedersen’s UNABOMBER explores his struggle to fit in at Harvard, vis-à-vis his participation in Henry Murray’s mind-controlling psychological experiments at the Ivy League institution. The crime drama, scheduled for release on September 25, 2026, stars Canadian actor Jacob Tremblay as Kaczynski. He was handpicked to play the role following his performance as Joe Kane, one of the perpetrators of the West Memphis police shootings in Christian Swegal’s Sovereign (2025).
Also starring Russell Crowe (Murray) and Shailene Woodley as Joanne Miller, the FBI agent at the forefront of the hunt to catch the Unabomber, Pedersen’s movie is poised to reignite conversations about the twisted genius who terrorized America with homemade bombs for nearly two decades. From May 1978 to April 1995, Ted Kaczynski delivered the bombs to random targets, killing three Americans, with at least 23 injured. After evading the FBI for 18 years, he was arrested in April 1996. How did that play out, and what happened to him afterwards?
Unpacking The Motive Behind Ted Kaczynski’s Lone-Wolf Terrorism

Born to Polish American parents in Chicago, Illinois, Ted Kaczynski grew up a normal child until his family moved to a neighboring village of Evergreen Park. Things changed in 5th grade after he scored 167 on an IQ test. Given his impressive genius-level score, he skipped 6th grade and went from being a sociable child who enjoyed the company of his peers to a recluse. Skipping the 6th grade, Kaczynski found himself among older classmates who bullied him. He began struggling to fit in, and this followed him into his days at Harvard.
After graduating from Harvard with a mathematics degree in 1962, he pursued his postgraduate education at the University of Michigan and became an assistant professor at age 25 in 1967. He taught mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley, but struggled to get along with his students. He abruptly resigned in June 1969 and moved into his parents’ home in Lombard, Illinois. He moved again in 1971. This time to a remote cabin he built near Lincoln, Montana.
Ted Kaczynski wanted to live alone in a natural environment, away from development and increasing technological advancement. He embraced extreme acts of environmental sabotage to have his way. When that didn’t seem enough, he started crafting and mailing pipe bombs to random people his library research linked to technological advancement destroying the natural environment.
How Was Ted Kaczynski Apprehended In Real Life?
Ted Kaczynski began his terror campaign in May 1978 and gained his moniker the following year. This was after he targeted American Airlines Flight 444 flying from Chicago to Washington, D.C. An FBI-led task force code-named UNABOM (University and Airline Bombing) was commissioned to nab the culprit. However, Kaczynski proved to be a hard catch. He built untraceable bombs, kept his deeds to himself, and deliberately left misleading clues for authorities. As the years went by, he built more sophisticated bombs and committed his first murder.
That was in December 1985, when a bomb he left in the parking lot of a Sacramento computer store detonated and killed the store’s owner, Hugh Scrutton. Nine years later, in December 1994, a package bomb claimed the life of Thomas J. Mosser, an advertising executive at his home in New Jersey. His last victim, the President of the California Forestry Association Gilbert Brent Murray, died in April 1995 after a bomb mailed to his Sacramento office exploded. Around this time, the task force investigating the Unabomber had grown to a team of over 150 investigators, analysts, and forensic scientists.
Yet the Unabomber remained elusive, compelling a decision to publish an essay from the terrorist, explaining his motives. The task force hoped a reader might identify the author, and that was exactly what happened. The Unabomber’s brother, David Kaczynski, read the essay published in The Washington Post, recognized the words were his brother’s, and approached the FBI with information that immediately set Ted Kaczynski apart as the prime suspect. Authorities raided his cabin on April 3, 1996, bringing an end to his reign of terror.
What Happened To The Unabomber After His Arrest?
With over $50 million spent on the investigation, Ted Kaczynski’s arrest dominated the media, fueling several speculations, including a theory suggesting he was the Zodiac Killer. Be that as it may, a federal grand jury indicted him before he was charged with 10 counts of bombing-related offenses. While his family hoped he would escape the death penalty through an insanity defense, the Unabomber rejected this, insisting on representing himself or replacing his federal public defenders. When this failed, he tried to hang himself with his underwear in his cell.
The Unabomber eventually pleaded guilty to all the charges brought against him in January 1998 to avoid a trial. He received four life sentences without parole, and was held in an isolated cell at Florence Supermax in Colorado. He was diagnosed with rectal cancer in March 2021, prompting his transfer to the Federal Medical Center, Butner, for treatment. Sick and depressed, Ted Kaczynski hanged himself on June 10, 2023.
