At the peak of his career in the late 2000s, Matt Prokop performed alongside Zac Efron in High School Musical 3: Senior Year. He began dating Modern Family star Sarah Hyland around that time, and was soon seen in a 2012 episode of the sitcom. The Victoria, Texas, native was poised for greater exploits in Hollywood when he fell from grace and lost it all.
Matt Prokop disappeared from the limelight in the mid-2010s after his career packed up, but he has seldom made headlines for his run-ins with the law. The former actor is currently facing charges ranging from aggravated assault to violation of bond and possession of child pornography. What happened to him? How did a promising actor on the brink of Hollywood greatness find himself in such a mess?
Matt Prokop Made His Acting Debut In A 2007 Episode Of Hannah Montana
Born in Victoria, Texas, on July 29, 1990, Matt Prokop relocated to Los Angeles at the age of 16 in 2006 to pursue an acting career. He landed his first role the following year, playing Troy McCann in the “Schooly Bully” episode of Hannah Montana. That same year, he appeared in an episode of The Office and pulled off his debut movie role in Greg Osborne’s romance drama, An Angel Named Billy.
Prokop popularized his name in the years that followed with performances in High School Musical 3: Senior Year (2008), Furry Vengeance (2010), Conception (2011), and Geek Charming (2011). His last performances were in 2013, when he played Tommy and Ian Vetter in Jarret Tarnol’s zombie horror film, April Apocalypse, and the “Defective” episode of TNT’s Perception, respectively. Prokop disappeared from the industry after co-producing the Tarnol brothers’ 2015 comedy-drama film, See You in Valhalla.
How His Breakup With Sarah Hyland Derailed His Career
Matt Prokop’s breakup with the Modern Family star altered the trajectory of his Hollywood career. The pair dated for roughly four years, beginning in the late 2000s. They starred together in Disney Channel’s Geek Charming and appeared inseparable in the years that followed. Amid rumors of their engagement back in 2013, Sarah Hyland told the media that they were living like a married couple.
“We’ve been living together a long time, we’re practically married,” she told E! News. That was in November 2013. Ten months later, Hyland broke up with Prokop and obtained a temporary restraining order against him. She claimed that Prokop had verbally and physically terrorized her throughout their relationship. Based on what she shared, the director of a rehab facility that Prokop had been admitted into contacted Hyland and advised her to get a restraining order against the actor because of his mental state and attitude towards her.
In October 2014, the actress was granted a permanent restraining order against Prokop. This prohibited him from attending the premiere of See You In Valhalla, starring Hyland. Matt Prokop’s career took a hit with Hyland’s public disclosure of the abuse she endured while dating him. He lost his place in the industry and has been unable to find his way back in. His several run-ins with the law haven’t helped matters.
Matt Prokop Was Arrested In 2024 For Assaulting Another Romantic Partner

Matt Prokop’s acting days are seemingly over. If he had managed to resuscitate his career after the ruinous breakup with Hyland, he might have lost it all over again due to his problematic lifestyle. After years of being away from the spotlight, the Geek Charming actor made headlines in May 2024 for assaulting his girlfriend.
He reportedly pushed and slammed her head into something, inflicting injuries that warranted an arrest. Prokop was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and resisting arrest. He regained his freedom on a $77,500 bond but was rearrested in December 2025 for violating the terms of the bond, in addition to evading and resisting arrest. An additional charge of possession or promotion of child pornography was later added to the list.
Following his arrest, the girlfriend who had parted ways with Prokop told Page Six she suffered years of abuse dating the former actor. “After many years of abuse, the effects are still very real and continue to impact my life,” she told the publication. “Right now, I’m taking time to heal privately with the support of close friends and family,” added Lucy, who was once engaged to Matt Prokop.
