Over three thousand hours of creation time and numerous props and materials later and we have, as Helena Asprou from Classic FM shows us, a droid orchestra that’s been programmed to play the theme of Star Wars. To some people this might seem like a gigantic waste of time and resources since in truth it does take a long time to set it up and to make sure that everything is as it needs to be. But if you’re a Star Wars fanatic this is likely something that you could see as worthwhile and even amazing in its own way. A lot of people would wonder why anyone would even bother going to all this trouble and spend this kind of money on a production that lasts less than two minutes but it’s pretty easy to explain since the individual responsible is obviously enthused about what he’s doing and wanted to create something unique and extravagant. It might not have the same effect on everyone, but then it doesn’t really need to since honestly not everyone gets as psyched about the Star Wars franchise as so many others tend to do at times.
Right now it’s very easy to be psyched about Star Wars since the next movie is coming out in a little over three months and while some people aren’t holding their breath as to whether it will be good or not others are already getting excited and starting the buzz that never seems to end when it comes to this franchise. Ever since The Last Jedi people have been a bit pensive about Star Wars considering that a lot of people still believe that Disney has effectively butchered the highly popular saga. It’s true that The Force Awakens and TLJ did in fact fall a bit short of the expectations that so many were putting on them, but at the same time it would seem that they are pushing the story forward, but in a manner that a lot of people don’t agree with. It’s enough to make a person sigh and remind those that are being so highly critical of the movie that ever since George Lucas sold Lucasfilm to Disney he doesn’t have nearly as much say in what goes on and, if we’re all being honest, the Mouse House has been seen to have its way with more than one franchise since the Avengers has become something of family-friendly movie series where the comics have gotten positively gritty and down and dirty in a big way. So unless Disney is going to admit that taking on Fox and Lucasfilm means that they need to keep the fans of both companies happy by not changing as much, get ready for your favorite movies to be coated with a layer of bubble wrap and PC culture that won’t offend so many people.
Is that fair? In a big way, yes. Disney has always liked to claim it’s a family-friendly corporation, especially when it comes to movies and TV shows it promotes since it’s meant to show some conflict in life, but never in the manner that Star Wars and Fox movies have been capable of showing in the past. Much like Sony with the initial Spider-Man movies and the X-Men, Disney has dulled down the edges of the Star Wars franchise in a way that makes us feel as though Rey and Kylo Ren might as well be wielding foam-padded lightsabers so they won’t hurt one another. The argument over not wanting kids to see any wanton violence is kind of hard to maintain since a lot of the Disney animated movies that have come along have had insanely scary and violent images that aren’t blood and guts gory but are still disturbing in a way that might freak young children out. If you want proof think of this, in Snow White and the Seven Dwarves the evil queen commanded the Huntsman to bring her Snow White’s heart. There are plenty of ways in which Disney has promoted violence even if people don’t want to admit it.
Ah but I’m off track, as talking about Star Wars and the relation to Disney tends to do at any given time. The idea of Star Wars being under the Disney umbrella isn’t one to rail against so much as it is to hope that Disney will eventually loosen up their huggy, happy-time feelings mode and simply let movie franchises be run the way they need to in order to keep fans and attract those that want something a little more hard-hitting. As for this attempt at recreating the theme for Star Wars it’s definitely something that took a lot of passion and a lot of time to really figure out since trying to get everything on key at the same time and planning for anything that might go wrong seems like a task and a half.
