10 Things You Didn’t Know about the Movie “Soapdish”

If you like soap operas then Soapdish might or might not have been the film for you. It’s a huge spoof on the world of the soap opera and is for all intents and purposes a widely-forgotten effort on behalf of a lot of actors that honestly was pretty funny. It managed to show at least in part what happens to soap opera stars when they start to age and get pushed out by new talent, and what happens when they self-destruct on set. Now granted, a lot of the stuff you see in the movie might not happen in real life but it’s entertaining to think about since the movie went so far over the top.

It’s hard to believe that being loaded with so many stars that the movie was essentially forgettable.

10. Kevin Kline had to withdraw from another movie thanks to the re-shoots on this one.

He was the original lead in Hook, but had to bow out thanks to this film. The part would eventually go to Robin Williams.

9. Burt Reynolds had to turn down the lead role for this film.

He was married to Loni Anderson at the time and she’d told him that she would be the laughingstock of Hollywood if he did this since he’d once had a very well known relationship with Sally Field.

8. Robert Downey Jr.’s part was written for a 50-year old man.

It was quickly changed around in order to make the part more amenable to Downey Jr.

7. Kevin Spacey has a brief voice-acting part in this film.

Apparently he is the voice of the man on the phone that dumps Celeste in the movie.

6. Patty Duke was announced for the lead position.

The part was cast with her in mind but either scheduling issues or a lack of desire kept her from the part because obviously Sally Field was cast instead.

5. The film couldn’t be shot where the director desired.

They wanted to shoot the film in Times Square on 47th Street but no one could guarantee their safety so they had to find a compromise.

4. When the film was being made and released Sally Field was married to the producer.

Apparently not too long after the film was released things started going south.

3. Three of the actors did in fact star in daytime soap operas.

Kevin Kline was in Search for Tomorrow, Teri Hatcher was in Capitol, and Paul Johansson was in Santa Barbara. So they had at least some experience with this type of acting.

2. This is one of two movies where Teri Hatcher is the villain.

The other is Spy Kids, which would come a number of years after this film.

1. Three of the actresses have played nuns in past movies.

Sally Field played a nun in The Flying Nun, while Whoopi Golderg and Kathy Najimy donned the habit in Sister Act and Sister Act 2.

As kind of a bonus there were real soap stars on set as well that helped out and could be seen around the film. Fans might have noticed.
