When Mazikeen Smith, or Mazikeen of the Lilim, is on your tail, you’re pretty much a goner. Once she gets her hands on you, she will hand you your butt on a silver platter. Quite literally. Though on tonight’s episode of Lucifer, a con artist/killer makes our resident demoness’s job a whole lot harder.
There isn’t much of a case this week as Maze hunts down a man named Ben Rivers (guest star Chris McKenna). The man allegedly killed two teenagers in cold blood and has been on the run ever since. The demoness is determined to find Rivers and bring him in, so she heads to Canada where she finally found the wanted fugitive. Shame he got away from her twice in one day. It looks like you have met your match, Mazikeen!
It’s also quite endearing to see both Detective Decker and Lucifer worry about Maze’s safety throughout the episode. The detective even tracked the demoness as the latter travels across the Great White North. Lucifer tried to convince his worried partner that Maze would be fine. His brief look of fear when he turned away from Detective Decker, however, says otherwise. If I didn’t know better, I’d think that the detective and Lucifer are like two parents worrying about their child when the child is away from home.
Another heart-warming moment was when Maze called Dr. Martin, who was conducting a session with Lucifer, getting the therapist to help save Rivers when he got himself shot during the scene with Joan, the crazy room service lady. The demoness even propped River’s head with a cushion and stitched up his wound via Dr. Martin’s instructions, much to the shock of her former master, who thinks that RIvers has broken his Maze.
I felt a bit sorry for Detective Espinoza in this episode. He was supposed to be on vacation in Hawaii when Detective Decker called him to check on Maze. That, and a thug twice his size knocked him out on the slopes of what I believe is the Whistler Blackcomb. Perhaps we shouldn’t tell him that Maze ate his pudding. Oh, nice Hawaiian shirt, by the way! It’s a little stereotypical, but I get that it’s for the overall narrative of the show. Like how it showed the receptionist at the ski lodge as a stereotypical Canadian. Just FYI, not all Canadians say “eh.”
The ending of the episode worries me greatly. A male figure is putting photos of Maze and Rivers into a file and then put said file into a filing cabinet. In the cabinet, there are files on Lucifer, Maze, Amenadiel, Charlotte Richards (formerly Mama Morningstar) and someone named Gaudium. Who is this mysterious figure and what information does he have on them?
Side Notes:
I rolled my eyes in amusement as both Maze and Lucifer got into Lt. Herrera’s office. The guy should seriously get a demoness/Devil-proof lock on his door or something. Then again, he doesn’t need to anymore.
Speaking of the corrupted lieutenant, I had an inkling that he looked familiar, as in the actor who is playing him. After doing some quick Googling, I discovered that his name is Marco Sanchez. He has starred in various crime dramas such as NCIS, CSI: Cyber, CSI: NY, CSI: Miami, MacGyver, The Mentalist, just to name a few. It’s always nice to see familiar faces on other shows.
Maze’s knife-throwing abilities continue to amaze me. She was able to wound the crazy room service lady from behind the table and without having to turn around and aim.
The mental image of Maze sitting on the couch at Detective Decker’s apartment along with the detective, Lucifer, Dr. Martin, and Trixie was very touching. It shows that the demoness is growing and is becoming more human so to speak. It seems that you do have a soul after all, hmm, Mazikeen?
I loved the interaction between Maze and Trixie. It’s like the former is the older sister that the latter wished she had. Even if said older sister is a demoness from Hell. Maze would do anything to make sure that the little girl is safe. Much like how Lucifer would do anything to ensure Detective Decker’s safety.
Speaking of Deckerstar. The scene where Lucifer booped Detective Decker’s nose after the former told the latter for the umpteenth time that Maze can take care of herself. It’s not much of a moment, but it’s still cute nonetheless.
