Many people watch celebrities like hawks. From what they’re doing to who they’re socializing with, what they’re eating, and wearing. How else can we gauge our own personal fashion sense if we don’t turn to celebrities and their style?
But what about those bizarre celeb fashion trends that we never fully understood or could bring ourselves to mimic, but still couldn’t stop obsessing over? Let’s take a look at some of the strangest, yet oddly appealing celeb fashion trends that we’re still talking about (and potentially wearing) today!
1. Bathrobes
First made popular by Snoop Dogg, bathrobes being worn outside the house and in place of actual clothes, seems to be fairly popular among celebrities. I mean, who wouldn’t want to dress in their comfortable pajamas or robe all day long? If we tried such a thing we might find ourselves committed, but when a celeb throws on a robe and hits Rodeo Drive it’s called fashion.
You might notice that many celebrities opt for the silky version, which appears chicer and less ragged. But designers are actually creating bathrobes for wear outside, vs. post-shower. They come in a variety of styles, designs, and lengths and many offer hoods and oversized pockets. Often, celebs wear these garments in place of a long coat or outer sweater. We can thank French clothing company Lacoste for this trend, along with designer Alexander Wang.
2. Grillz
Those shiny gold and silver mouthpieces that we’re accustomed to seeing on rappers and hip-hop stars bring a different level of bling to a celeb’s ensemble. Little Wayne wears them well. But what about other, less obvious celebs who have decided to adopt a custom grill as their newest accessory? And what’s the point of these mouthpieces anyway?
For starters, they’re a great way to show off your cash. What celebrity doesn’t like flashing their money here and there? Whether it’s driving a sports car the rest of us can’t afford to even look at or dripping in jewelry on the red carpet, celebs want to remind us that they have what we could never dream of affording. Wearing a little bling on your smile is just another way to say, “Look at me – I’m rich!”
But a grill also brings a little attitude to even the coolest celebs. There’s a long list of stars that opted for some mouth bling that might surprise you, including Katy Perry, Madonna, and Miley Cyrus.
3. Crocs
Crocs are truly loved and hated by people of all ages. From toddlers and school-age kids to grandparents and even dads, Crocs can be found everywhere and in a multitude of colors and styles. But how did they gain their popularity? And was this always the case?
Crocs first hit the market in 2004 and were an instant hit. They were functional, simple, and cost-effective. Unfortunately for the company, by 2008 the novelty wore off and too many copycats almost meant an end for the footwear mogul. But, instead of counting themselves out, Crocs made an impressive comeback by rebranding and redesigning the famous shoe. To appeal to a wider customer base and even win over those ‘Croc haters’ who found the clogs absolutely hideous, in 2009 the company branched out and began selling wedges, boots, loafers, and flats.
Now, the company still sells its classic clogs, but more than 50% of sales come from other Croc styles. And if this isn’t enough to convince you that Crocs are likely here to stay, an updated version of the clog actually made its debut last year on the London runway! Fashion designer Christopher Kane showcased models in dresses and Crocs adorned with stones. Who knew Crocs could be so high-fashion?
4. Platform Shoes
“Tell me what you want, what you really, really want” – were the Spice Girls talking about relationships or platform shoes? Because Baby Spice and the like were seen sporting these high-rise shoes on the regular. Not to mention, they were a particular favorite fashion in the 70’s. But, believe it or not, these pumped up kicks are making a comeback!
Whether you prefer sandals, wedges, shoes, or boots, you can pretty much find a platform in any style, in any color, and in any store. It’s also no surprise that former Posh Spice, Victoria Beckham, is an avid platform wearer. However, her style is more the platform heel, which is a widely popular design, worn by Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Hudson, just to name a few. So what makes a platform heel different? It’s basically an ultra-high heel with a thick platform beneath the toe. Now, if we could just master walking in them…
5. Tracksuits
These comfortable and fashionable outfits aren’t just for the gym. Tracksuits are perfect for running errands, shopping, and for celebs, any occasion will do! From designers like Adidas, Puma, and Fila, tracksuits come in a host of styles, designs, and fabrics. And celeb tracksuit talk wouldn’t be complete without discussing Juicy Couture. These velour numbers were made popular in the early 2000’s by the Kardashians and Paris Hilton, but they’re still hot on the scene today.
Not only are tracksuits comfortable, but they’re chic as well. Just ask Selena Gomez and Rihanna. These hot celebs are pairing Gucci and Chloé suits with designer shoes, purses, and jewelry, which takes this look to a whole other level. Go extra comfy and wear your tracksuit with Uggs! Think of the tracksuit as a more socially accepted outerwear than the previously mentioned bathrobe.
Keeping Up with the Kardashians
Sure, this family is the epitome of high-fashion. From Kim and Kanye to Kylie and Chloe, these women are staples of style. But in order to keep up with the ever-changing world of celebrity trends, you’ll need to keep your eyes, your mind, and potentially your wallet, open.
