Zoe Saldana just took a big step forward in the eyes of many as she put industry workers that think Marvel stars are selling out on blast in one of the best ways. For a while superhero movies have been dominating the big screen in a very big way. Some of have been great, some have been flops, but regardless of what people think they’ve all been loved by someone. Those folks in the industry however that think their fellow actors are selling out by taking on these roles need a serious wake-up call it seems, as they seem to have forgotten just what acting is about and why they continue to stand in front of the cameras. It’s their job and their passion, but it wouldn’t mean much without the fans.
Saldana had this to say:
“I’ve been in rooms with people in this industry who are great at what they do, but they’re absolutely elitist and they look down at movies like the Marvel films or actors like myself. They think we’re selling out in some way.
Every time they speak I feel so disappointed in them, because whenever you see pictures of people in this industry who donate their time to children in need, it’s these actors that live in the world that you feel is selling out. It’s these actors that understand the role that they play inspires a five-year-old who has one dying wish to meet a superhero. That actor takes time out of their life and sits down with that five-year-old and says, ‘I see you, I hear you, and you matter.’
Those elitists should be a little more cognizant about what playing a superhero means to a young child. Because you’re not just dissing me, you’re dissing what that child considers important in their world. I feel so proud to be living in space, to be playing green and blue aliens, to inspire, primarily, the younger generations. I remember what it was like to be young and to feel completely excluded out of the mainstream conversation of life because I was just little and unimportant and ‘other.'”
Being a superhero or a villain in one of the many movies that’s come out might not always seem like the most dignified role, but that doesn’t matter. It’s the joy it brings to those that go and watch the movies. Kids that get to see their favorite superheroes on the big screen and adults that get to enjoy the nostalgic feel of their childhood favorites absolutely enjoy this chance to live the moments that are being realized now. Those elitists in Hollywood that think this is beneath them don’t seem to realize that some of their roles that they’ve taken on in their lives have been a little less dignified than some of the roles that are portrayed in the comic book movies. Their own hubris is what makes them seem so ridiculous at times.
Comic book movies have come to define one very important aspect of cinema, the action-packed fun that people absolutely enjoy.
