10 Things You Didn’t Know about Willie Garson

In Hollywood there are always those actors that are there to make the leads look good, and a lot of them end up making themselves look great since the audience has learned to identify with the supporting actors as well. Willie Garson is one of the few actors that has made the role of the supporting actor look stupendous since he’s played the role for so long that it’s a part of who he is. In fact he’s come to enjoy it since it’s kind of obvious that he doesn’t have the classic looks of a Hollywood lead or the pedigree of someone that should be given his own film every so often just to push his name. But he accepts this and what makes it so great is that he thrives in this role and makes it his own wherever he goes. He’s easy to relate to, that’s why a lot of people know him and find him extremely endearing. Leads come and go all the time after all since it’s a tenuous position, but the sidekick or the support is always going to be needed since they help to bolster the leads in so many ways.

Here are a few things you might not have known about Willie.

10. He was in White Collar.

Mozzie was the guy that was always there for his friends but was also always there to say “I told you so” if anything went wrong or out of sorts. He was that type of friend that wouldn’t let you down but that you might have to watch every now and again, just to be sure of his motives.

9. He’s participated and won in Celebrity Poker Showdown.

This is where the difference between being a lead actor and a sidekick really didn’t matter since the ability to play the game was far more important. Willie went on to win this tournament with a style that many people just couldn’t hang with.

8. He’s good friends with Sarah Jessica Parker.

Having been on Sex and the City it’s easy to think that he managed to hang around with some of his costars, though many might point out that it was in a very platonic fashion. Honestly it seems great just to have friends sometimes in influential places.

7. He’s played Lee Harvey Oswald three times.

The funny thing about this is that he played the same role three different times in three different productions that had nothing to do with one another. Apparently those in charge of said projects must have thought he had the right look and wanted to use him again and again.

6. He has been in a LOT of movies and TV shows.

His resume is more than a little lengthy and it shows that he plays a very wide range of characters. The level of talent with this guy is something that’s almost off the charts since he does overlap his characters a bit but given that it happens so far between projects it’s still never noticed quite as much.

5. He has a degree in Theater.

Willie is also a very educated man which means that like many of his costars he’s gone through classes and training to get where he’s at and as a result is no better or worse than many of those in Hollywood today. He’s kind of the every-man when it comes to his accomplishments, just much more famous.

4. He’s a character actor.

Some people are made for the lead roles and others are made to back them up and offer support. Willie is the kind of guy that, looking at him, you might think he’d get typecast quite often from one role to another, but in all honesty the roles he’s taken on have been quite different throughout the years.

3. He adopted a son.

Willie adopted his son when he was 7, which might seem a bit old for some people when it comes to taking a child into their home. One thing about it is that you don’t deal with diapers, feeding, or any other stuff that babies need. But it is possible to have to deal with massive issues when it comes to the child’s past. So far however it seems that Willie and his son have been doing just fine.

2. He’s into several charities.

Willie has proven to be a very giving man in his life and has no doubt set a great example for his son throughout the years now as he’s been involved in more than one charity and has given willingly to others in need.

1. He was in There’s Something About Mary.

His role in this movie isn’t all that big but it is noticeable as he plays the zit-ridden friend of Ted both in the past and present. In fact he’s the guy that clues Ted in to the fact that the PI he hired to track down his dream girl was lying.

The world will always need sidekicks and character actors, and Willie is a great representation of both.
