There’s been a lot of talk about feminism, stereotypes, and the like since the moment Wonder Woman came onto the film scene this year. Yet throughout it all Etta Candy has only ever gotten a small amount of attention. That’s kind of ironic really since her role in the film was discussed so briefly and then pushed to the side for the agendas of those that had an ax to grind. In truth her role was actually a great deal more important than it was initially thought to be. She is after all one of the only women that can possibly tell Steve Trevor what’s what and expect him to listen, and is one of the only people at all in the film that can grant Diana a bit of wisdom that she will actually listen to, for a short period of time anyway.
So why else is she important to the DCU?
She’s the bit-player.
Bit-players are those that are generally kept in the background and are only pulled to the front when the dialogue needs a type of bridge or a plot point to make things run a little smoother. They’re the ones that basically iron out the finer details that the bigger stars don’t generally get tasked with. In Wonder Woman for instance she’s the person that keeps Steve Trevor informed and up to date on any information outside of his mission that he might need. She also becomes the fashion and customs consultant for Diana, as Steve is not quite up to the task as he is a man and let’s face it, Diana is not all that knowledgeable about men just yet. In this manner Etta is the one person she is looking to for help to blend into a culture that she does not understand. Plus, did you notice that she willingly allows Etta to take her sword? Do you really think she would have entrusted it to a man?
It’s believed that Etta will appear in Wonder Woman 2.
No one quite knows yet what her role will be or if her character will still be alive. Wonder Woman 2 is supposedly going to be set decades after the war, perhaps in the 1980’s or 90’s, which means that Etta would be a senior citizen by then and quite incapable of helping Diana with much of anything. The other possibility is that her character will have passed on by then. There are rumors that her character could be used for flashbacks, which would make sense. Perhaps Etta will stay on with Diana once she decides to remain in the world beyond her home. It would make for an interesting pairing and definitely help Diana with her continued transition into the life she will have developed by the time the next film hits.
Etta Candy might not have had much of a role in Wonder Woman aside from being a secretary and a comedic presence, but she did gain a small following of loyal fans and will no doubt be a part of the DCU in the near future.
