Chad and Carey Hayes, the writers of The Conjuring, are going to be taking on the Die Hard series as it’s being stated that the movie is going ahead and will begin eventually. Having a couple of people that written for straight to TV action flicks seems like it would be questionable but it could be a workable deal if they keep in mind that they’re now writing for a less emotional and more action-packed franchise. Their credentials hold up despite the fact that they’ve worked on a few movies that weren’t exactly universally loved such as The Reaping and Whiteout. With Die Hard however they’re already up against a slight hill since people have either loved the continuation of the franchise or have walked away from it in disgust after the second and third installment. In fact it seems like the only one capable of bringing the people back at all is John McClane, and even he’s starting to lose some of his staying power when it comes to pushing forward a plot.
McClane is a great character, but expecting Bruce Willis to keep playing him one movie after another is starting to seem like it’s asking too much. Willis is willing to keep it up, but at one point it’s going to beg the question of how much longer can people expect McClane to keep going in the same manner that he is? Willis has been an action star since the first Die Hard, the tough as nails cop that’s in over his head but somehow lucks out just enough when it comes time to get the job done. He’s survived against incredible odds and always seems to outwit the terrorists in some way but the day that this ceases to work has to be coming. That could be why they’re switching it up a bit for this film.
In the upcoming Die Hard 6 McClane will be shown as a young man and as his regular self, which now begs the question of who’s going to be tapped to play the young McClane. A lot of people are already hoping that it doesn’t become another Looper in which someone much younger that looks nothing like Willis will be used. But as some folks would love to point out, recasting the parts of the old heroes isn’t an exact science, as the current detractors of Solo would probably state. The only thing a lot of them don’t seem to recognize is that of course such actors only come around every so often, but when it comes to matching them with people that can truly act they might not always be able to get the look down as precisely as possible.
There’s no chance of using prostheses that could alter someone’s face or CGI since the attempt with this has already proven to be a point of frustration with fans of other movies. Whoever gets the nod to play young McClane is going to have to be spot on for the most part.
