Wayward Sisters is the second Supernatural spin-off to fail to secure a series order. For those who are curious, the spin-off would have been centered on Sheriff Jody Mills as well as her surrogate daughters fighting a wide range of monsters in Sioux Falls in the state of South Dakota, meaning that it would have been an interesting contrast in that it would have been centered in a single place instead of location-hopping on a constant basis. Going in, there were a fair number of people who were optimistic about the chances of Wayward Sisters because there was a positive response to the backdoor pilot when it was broadcast as part of Season 13 of Supernatural. However, it seems that said optimism was premature because Wayward Sisters failed to secure the series order. Moreover, it has now been revealed why it failed to secure the series order.
Why Did Wayward Sisters Fail to Get a Series Order?
Initially, there wasn’t much information that could be found about the exact reason for Wayward Sisters failing to secure the series order. As a result, interested individuals were forced to speculate based on more or less nothing, which is never the most productive of circumstances. However, the network president of The CW has made a recent statement on the matter, which can be summed up as The CW as having chosen to pass on Wayward Sisters in preference for a series called Legacies.
For those who are curious, Legacies will be a spin-off of The Vampire Diaries. Like its name suggests, it will be centered around the next generation at the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted, meaning that it would not be too much of an exaggeration to say that it sounds like X-Men set in the setting of both The Vampire Diaries and its earlier spin-off The Originals. Regardless, the important part for people who were hoping for Wayward Sisters to get a series order is that for whatever reason, the people at The CW seem to have felt that Legacies was a better fit than Wayward Sisters for what they see as the overall course of their network.
What Happens Now?
As for what happens now, well, that remains to be seen. For example, there is a petition that is intended to change The CW’s mind on the matter by making a show of support, which has managed to collect tens of thousands of signatures so far. However, such petitions tend not to have much success at changing the minds of TV executives, so it remains doubtful whether this particular petition will have better luck than the rest. Meanwhile, it should be mentioned that while Wayward Sisters seems to be dead for the moment, the characters remain alive and well in the Supernatural setting. As a result, it is not unreasonable to expect that they might pop up from time to time in the future. For people who were hoping for a full series, that probably isn’t much consolation, but when all has been said and done, there are those who will see something as being better than absolutely nothing at all. As for the creative figures behind Wayward Sisters, their attitudes don’t inspire much confidence in the chance of the series getting another shot, seeing as how Supernatural showrunner as well as Wayward Sister co-writer Andrew Dabb outright described it as a fight that can’t be won. Considering the time that has been spent on getting this project off of the ground, the failure of Wayward Sisters to secure a series order must be hitting Dabb and the others hardest of all.
Unfortunately, it is looking as though Supernatural might never get a spin-off. After all, Wayward Sisters wasn’t the first Supernatural spin-off to fail to secure a series order, seeing as how there was Supernatural: Bloodlines before it. Given the fact that there have been two failures, it is difficult to imagine that the relevant parties will be interested in giving the idea another shot anytime soon, particularly since there were such high hopes for Wayward Sisters going in. Theoretically, it is possible that Wayward Sisters might see a revival because of fan interest, but in practice, interested individuals might want to keep that sense of hope tempered down to a reasonable minimum lest disappointment follow swiftly upon it.
