Approximately 30 years and four movies make Tim Allen Buzz Lightyear. This means fans are wondering why Tim Allen is not in Lightyear. It’s the ‘new’ installment of the Toy Story franchise, and fans are confused. Tim Allen has always been Buzz Lightyear. It’s not the same without him, and even the struggling box office numbers make it obvious the production company made a poor choice in replacing the iconic Buzz with a new voice. It’s not that fans dislike Chris Evans, who was tapped to replace Tim Allen. It’s just that fans don’t want to see Chris Evans take on a role that isn’t his.
Lightyear is Not About Buzz Lightyear
Fans fail to realize that this movie has nothing to do with the Toy Story era Buzz Lightyear. Remember – the toy in the Toy Story movies is an action figure. Where do action figures come from? They come from characters. This movie is about the character who inspires the toy that plays such a massive role in the Toy Story movies. Buzz and Woody are, perhaps, the most iconic duo of all time – but the original Lightyear character from which the Buzz Lightyear toy was derived simply is not Buzz. So, Chris Evans essentially plays the role of an action hero whose likeness is turned into an action figure.
Tim Allen Has Always Been Honest About his Feelings on Lightyear
We all love that Tim Allen speaks his mind, but he keeps it elegant, concise, and to the point. He’s a man who doesn’t bother sugarcoating his feelings, but he’s also the epitome of class. He’s had a few things to say about the movie Lightyear, and here’s a snippet of the iconic comedian’s feelings.
“The brass that did the four movies, it’s just a whole new team that really has nothing to do with the first movies. It’s Tom Hanks and me. There’s really no Toy Story’s Buzz without Woody. I’m a plot guy…and it seemed to be a big adventure story. As I see it, it’s not a big adventure story. It’s a wonderful story. It just doesn’t seem to have any connection to the toy. It has no relationship to Buzz. It’s just no connection. I wish there was a better connection,” is Allen’s statement. He’s the master of issuing thoughtful compliments while also ensuring the world knows where he stands outside the niceties.
Lightyear Did Not Do Well
One might think that a movie about one of the most famous and most beloved Pixar characters might do better in theaters. Alas, it did not. And this has nothing to do with fans asking why Tim Allen is not in Lightyear. This has everything to do with the movie itself and the ‘woke’ issues Disney and Pixar are throwing out. According to Newsweek, critics are not thrilled with the movie and its ‘woke’ theme. An opinion that is shared by disappointing box office ratings and income. Lightyear is among the worst opening weekends in Pixar history. The film opened on Father’s Day weekend 2022 with a disappointing $50.2 million in box office sales. It’s nowhere near what Pixar thought the movie would bring in.
Perhaps Patricia Heaton said it best. “Saw the trailer for Buzzy Lightyear, and I can say that Disney/Pixar made a HUGE mistake in not casting my pal @ofctimallen Tim Allen in the role that he originated, the role that he owns. Tim IS Buzz! Why would they completely castrate this iconic, beloved character?” she posted on Twitter following the first trailer. She is not alone in her thoughts, either. The previously mentioned Newsweek article also discusses that fans of Disney and Pixar do not find it amusing that the company is going ‘woke’ and including same-sex kissing scenes in movies.
Should We be Asking Why is Tim Allen Not in Lightyear?
At the end of the day, should we ask why Tim Allen is not in Lightyear? Should we, instead, be thankful he’s not part of this movie? While it’s likely fans would have been far more receptive to the movie with Tim Allen in his role as Buzz, it also seems that the ‘weakness’ of Disney and Pixar in 2022 would have caused the movie to fail regardless. Perhaps we should be thankful our favorite comedian was not cast in this role. We love him too much to see his name attached to something fans aren’t happy with. Tim Allen
