Now that Orphan Black is over, chances are that Maslany is going to have to find something that is really capable of challenging her, and that isn’t going to be easy. The real question is will she take what she can get and perform below her talent level, or will she hold out for the roles that are difficult and are more her speed. Chances are she might get paid better for the latter, but she would at least have steady work with the former.
The issue with taking the greater workload is that not only does it limit her options on what she could really do, but it also plays down to her talent in a way that could be damaging to her reputation if she does it for too long. It might sound elitist and even egotistical but her work with Orphan Black has been nothing less than inspiring throughout the show’s run. She has done a brilliant bit of acting throughout the entire show and has shown that she has the skill set to take on much larger projects in the future with the type of intricacies that make it necessary to watch a film again and again in order to get the real feel of what is being shown.
But if she decides to buckle down and simply work on what’s there and what’s available her skill set could potentially be wasted on something that does little more than pander to a crowd and entertain those that want something quick and easy, not drawn out and complicated. The desire for an easygoing role could be a nice a break really while she sorts out what to do with the rest of her career, but to stick with such a role for too long could cause her popularity to dip and her skills to dull over time. She needs something challenging and engaging in order to stay at the level she’s at in this moment.
Of course this is a lot of conjecture and theory. What she might want to do could be something far simpler than Orphan Black, but it would be a shame to see. Taking on bigger and more advanced projects would be what a lot of fans would love to see Maslany do. The chance to up her popularity and increase her fan base should always be the goal, as this is what makes people capable of existing in the public eye. In order to do that her skill set would have be recognized and utilized on a constant basis so that those skills are allowed to remain sharp and useful at all times. There’s no need to push her so hard that she burns out and loses all passion for acting, but keeping her busy and on her toes at times could in fact keep that edge that fans have come to enjoy.
There’s nothing worse than seeing an actor that is bound for greatness derailed by the ending of their show. Worse than that though is the reality that they could have made the decision to lean towards greatness and didn’t because no one would give them the chance.
