Thirty-four years ago, Beetlejuice opened on theaters to widespread acclaim. A critical and commercial success, the fantasy horror film made almost $75 million with a $15 million budget. It’s no surprise that the film dominated the box office during its time. The film was directed by legendary filmmaker Tim Burton, who had worked on movies like Frankenweenie and Pee-wee’s Big Adventure and would eventually create masterpieces such as Sleepy Hollow and Big Fish.
Beetlejuice is a 1988 American comedy horror film directed by Tim Burton, produced by The Geffen Film Company and distributed by Warner Bros. The plot follows a recently deceased couple who become ghosts haunting their former home, and an evil spirit named Beetlejuice from the “underworld” who tries to drive the new family away. Michael Keaton stars as Beetlejuice, Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis star as the new ghosts, and Winona Ryder plays a teenage girl involved with them. The success of the film spawned an animated television series, video games, and merchandise. A sequel, Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian, was proposed but not made.

Alec Baldwin

Alec Baldwin played the character of Adam Maitland in Beetlejuice. He has also had a successful career on stage, appearing in stage productions of A Streetcar Named Desire in Broadway and Macbeth. In recent years, Baldwin has been perhaps best known for his role as Jack Donaghy on the television sitcom 30 Rock. He has won two Emmy awards for his work on the show and has also hosted Saturday Night Live a record 16 times. Geena Davis
Geena Davis portrayed Barbara Maitland, Adam’s wife, in Beetlejuice. After starring in Tim Burton’s 1988 cult classic, Davis continued to work steadily in Hollywood. In the 1990s, she appeared in a string of successful films, including Thelma & Louise, A League of Their Own, and Stuart Little. Davis has also been an outspoken advocate for gender equality in the entertainment industry. In 2007, she founded the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, which is dedicated to research and advocacy around the portrayal of women and girls in the media. More recently, Davis has starred in several television series, including Grey’s Anatomy and The Exorcist. She also appeared in six episodes of the canceled Netflix series GLOW.
Winona Ryder
