What the New Wonder Woman 1984 Footage Tells Us

Wonder

There are a lot of questions leading into Wonder Woman 1984 at this point that we’re hoping the upcoming trailer will tell us since comic book magic and movie magic tend to be a little confusing at times. For instance, bringing back Steve Trevor, y’know, Diana’s love interest that sacrificed himself to keep the enemy from spreading the weapon that might have decimated entire cities and more, and Antiope, who also died in the first movie. DC has a lot of explaining to do it would seem since it doesn’t appear that either character is going to be part of a dream sequence, but as you can imagine this will be handled in some way that will be designed to make sense but in the end will end up being termed as ‘movie magic’ because finite beings have trouble believing that anyone could come back from the dead unless they’re name started with a J or weren’t fictional characters whose lifespan can be stopped and started like a watch. Mike Floorwalker from Looper seems to be thinking along the same lines but also seems to be a little more hopeful than I do since the story has been set in the first movie and it would seem that pushing forward without any continuity could possibly damage the reputation of the first movie.

It’s a desire to see this movie do just as well as the first one since Wonder Woman was one of DC’s only real success stories based on fan reaction and not just the box office, but as a rule sequels are usually diminished for one reason or another since they have to stand independent of the original and do their own thing or somehow build on the original story and make it believable as well as enjoyable for people to really get the idea that they’re worth that much. Wonder Woman has become something of a bastion of hope to go along with the TV shows when it comes to DC finding a formula that works, since the other movies, barring Aquaman which people tended to like, kind of fizzled out. Jordan Revenaugh of The Albion Pleiad has more to say on this matter. A lot of folks are hopeful that The Batman will propel DC a little further as well, but at this point it sounds as though Robert Pattinson’s movie will be less inclusive of the rest of the DC universe and will focus on itself and stay in its own lane. That seems like a good idea at this point simply because the Batman character needed some serious work after Batfleck, and if Pattinson can revive the character then maybe it might be time to bring the Justice League back again. Until then however the heroes might need to see if they can stand on their own two feet. So far Wonder Woman has shown that she can do this, and hopefully the sequel will continue that trend.

But the continuity issues need to be solved, since an out of place Steve Trevor does need to be explained as Rianne Houghton of DigitalSpy might agree, as does the possibility of seeing Antiope yet again. It does look as though we might get to see the emergence of Cheetah, one of Wonder Woman’s toughest enemies, which would be great since we’ve already seen her take on and defeat Ares in the first movie, which honestly was kind of over too quickly and wasn’t all that impressive given the fact that David Thewliss doesn’t really portray that great of an enemy, especially when one has to use CGI to make him seem so imposing. There’s no doubt that the same will happen in the coming movie as well since one can’t really see Kristen Wiig doing the kind of stunts that would be needed for the character. But hopefully this will happen and we’ll get to see some serious action scenes that aren’t just Wonder Woman and will set up a great fight scene.

Apart from this it looks as though we’ll get to see a lot of how Diana is continually adjusting to the world around her, which is kind of funny since unless she went back to Themyscira to stay after the first movie, which she obviously doesn’t, then she’ll have seen the world changing throughout the decades and shouldn’t be too mesmerized or surprised by what’s there to be seen. If anything those around her would be more apt to stare in wonder at her as she doesn’t age thanks to her divine heritage. Plus, if Steve Trevor really is back then he’s the one that should probably be looking around uncomfortably as he doesn’t seem likely to recognize the world of the 80s, especially if he somehow slipped through time (it could happen) and was deposited in the 80s. Imagine going from the horrors of the war and emerging decades later, especially in the 80s. That’d be a serious culture shock without a doubt.
