What’s one of the most memorable scenes in the movie Point Break? It’s when Johnny Utah let’s Bodhi off the hook at the very end so he could surf the wave of all waves to his inevitable death. It was a moment where Utah stripped himself of being a cop and allowed his friend his one last dying wish. It’s not as nearly a touching a scene as I’m leading you to believe because Point Break was as cheesy as they come, despite the movie being incredible and directed by Katheryn Bigelow I might add.
Why do I bring up this scene? Because in the move Point Break you actually see a surfer riding a wave that seems virtually impossible to ride. But that’s what these guys do. The Laird Hamilton’s of the world thrive on monster waves like that. Recently a surfer by the name of Francisco Porcella took on a wave that easy rivals the one you seen in Point Break.
Photographer Pedro Miranda explains the frightening death wave:
“The session was really intense. The conditions were a bit messy, with onshore winds and the swell coming a bit more North, instead of the predicted Northwest. The wave formation wasn’t perfect, with a lot of mutant waves, making that lineup even more weird and unpredictable than usual. It was gnarly and potentially lethal. You had that strange feeling that someone could get seriously hurt or worse, at any moment… It was high tension til’ everybody was out of the water.”
