Watch Guillermo del Toro Once Play a Werewolf in an Alka-Seltzer Commercial

So Guillermo del Toro became a werewolf one time for an Alka-Seltzer commercial. Who knew? It’s kind of obvious that this would be pulled out now that his film The Shape of Water has done so well at the Oscars, but this is just an odd commercial. Obviously the gist of it is that he eats like a beast and once the indigestion hits he becomes one. It doesn’t seem like any amount Alka-Seltzer would be enough to change the breast back into a man however, but obviously you get the idea of the commercial. When your stomach is hurting it seems like a lot of people might howl and groan but thankfully they don’t start sprouting fur, claws, and an elongated snout. Otherwise fast food chains might go out of business quickly.

It’s interesting sometimes to see how people got their start and what they did in their earlier years. Most people don’t just start out being awesome in the business, they have to really make an effort to get things to go their way and to make it work. Del Toro obviously had to pay his dues on his way up, but now that he’s a master storyteller and director there’s probably no chance that you’d ever see him in a commercial again unless it was something that he felt was needed to give to the fans. Heck, he’s the kind of guy that might do cameos in his film but you’d never know it unless someone told you. And chances are they’re not the same type of cameos that you’re used to from other directors and actors.

You’ve got to wonder just a little bit if he’s embarrassed by this or if it brings up a bit of nostalgia for him that’s either pleasant or easily discarded. It might seem like he’s such a big shot now that he wouldn’t think of things like this as being important in his life any longer, but look at it this way, it’s important sometimes to remember where you’ve been so that you can appreciate where you’re at now. And right now he’s at the top, standing on the peak and enjoying the moment no doubt. The great part is that he’s earned it and should be enjoying every second that has come to him thanks to his film. But it pays to wonder if he remembers moments like these at times with a grin on his face just thinking of how long it probably took to get into and out of the makeup that was necessary for this commercial.

How many other actors and directors are there that would be able to dredge up similar memories of when they were first getting started and discover that they could remember every last little detail of the shoots that got them noticed? Guillermo likely isn’t the only one but he’s the one we’re focused on right now since this commercial is actually kind of hilarious. It doesn’t make a lot of sense until you think about it a little more, then it becomes a little more clear.
