The Walking Dead’s Infamous CGI Deer: What’s the Deal?

Fans of The Walking Dead are in an outrage over the now infamous CGI deer.  And it makes complete sense.  I mean what the hell is a deer doing sitting there in the middle of a bunch of fighting zombies making so much noise, not to mention acting incredibly calm when deer are extremely skittish?

Here’s the thing.  It’s obvious to the viewer that Rick doesn’t die there. The point isn’t to fool us, it’s to fool Michonne. The viewers see the “deer” so we know that that is the real casualty. The switch is actually a character moment for Michonne who doesn’t know the “deer” was there. All she knows is Rick fell, and the walkers have surrounded the area and are eating something. Her only logical conclusion is it is Rick. The point was to develop Michonne’s character. How would she handle the death of someone she is close to? The only other time that’s happened was Andrea’s death.

That being said I agree with the majority of fans in that it was poorly done.  It would have been worth it to get a real deer.  How hard is that?  Oh right, because deer are skittish in real life and there’s just no chance it would stay still.  Still though, come on guys, figure it out.   You can do better than CGI.  This almost reminds me of the smoke monster from Lost.  Is it so difficult to create real smoke?

Anyway, if you want to see the scene again and get angry, here you go.
