It is that time of the year again. The new season of network television begins tomorrow. One of the first series to begin airing new episodes for the 2017-2018 season is The Voice. The series will debut its 13th installment on Monday and feature a new coach. Jennifer Hudson will make her debut alongside staples Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, and Miley Cyrus. Here are five things you may not know about the former American Idol contestant.
1. Her Music Career Started Before American Idol
Jennifer Hudson rose to fame starring on the third season of American Idol in 2004. But The Voice coach tried to start her career a few years before appearing on the reality series. In January 2002, Hudson signed a contract with Righteous Records. However, when landing her American Idol gig, Hudson was able to get out of the 5-year contract.
2. She Started a Foundation
The Voice coach Jennifer Hudson experienced tragedy in 2008 when her mother, brother, and nephew were murdered. Because of the brutal killings, Hudson’s family created the Hudson-King Foundation for Families of Slain Victims. In honor of her nephew, Hudson and her sister started the Julian D. King Gift Foundation. This organization gives school supplies to families in need that live in the Chicago area.
3. She is Halfway to an EGOT
Jennifer Hudson is an singing and acting sensation. The Voice coach has receive several accolades for her work in music and film. She has received two of the four rewards required for the coveted EGOT title. Hudson received a Grammy in 2009 for her debut album. Two years prior, Hudson won her Oscar for her work in the film Dreamgirls.
4. She has Her Own Day
Jennifer Hudson has been recognized with numerous accolades throughout her career. She was even rewarded her own day in the city of Chicago. In 2007, mayor Richard Daley made March 6th Jennifer Hudson Day. This day is to remember Hudson for her singing and acting talents.
5. All Three Albums Made the Top 10
Jennifer Hudson has made three albums during her music career. The self-titled album dropped in 2008 and reached #2 on the Billboard 200. Her next album titled, “I Remember Me,” also reached #2 on the charts. Three years later, The Voice coach released her third album called “JHUD.” The album peaked at #10 on the charts.
