While this video might explain the reason that people have stopped watching The Walking Dead, it doesn’t really express the real hypocrisy of those fans that have turned it off simply because it’s too much to watch. It’s true that things have changed throughout the run of the show that brought back the zombie craze with its dark and apocalyptic feel. Since it’s inception The Walking Dead has in fact shifted from surviving the hordes of undead roaming the lands and focused more on the living tearing at one another for anything from minor slights to much-needed supplies. But really, if you want the reason people have stopped watching The Walking Dead it boils down to this: they’re fickle.
Sure, the story has changed and it’s stalled in a few episodes. Yes, some of the best characters have been taken out far too early. And it definitely got darker when Negan showed up with the Saviors. But come on now, it was dark as it could be when the Governor showed up, when Michonne was seen walking around with two pacified walkers to blend in, and it definitely was dark when the group made their way into the prison and had to clear it out before making it their home. So it got darker when Negan came around? Did people expect it to get bright and cheerful at some point? Maybe the other zombie shows that have put a comedic and even light spin on the subject have made their own fame with such methods, but The Walking Dead was meant to be dark no matter what. This is a show about surviving in a world where the dead walk and are constantly on the move, while the survivors do what they can to see the next day, which includes banding together to take people out or exploit them in some way. It’s almost like a mirror being thrust at humanity to see what would happen, and what people would become in such a crisis.
Not wanting to watch the show because it got too dark is one of the worst copouts ever made since the comic has never been much of anything but dark. Those that read the comics and were waiting for the show must have known what was coming, so Glenn’s death was no surprise. So many people were theorizing that Abraham was going to die as well that his death shouldn’t have come as any surprise either aside from the timing and method of it. People complaining about how depressing the show is are those that tend to be extremely fickle with their TV shows and are likely attracted by the nearest thing that moves, or is inordinately shiny. Claiming that a show that’s been dark since its inception isn’t something a real fan would do, though it’s something that a lot of casual fans would think up.
Quite honestly enough people still watch the show to make it worth it, and the current developments are shaping up to bring something special. But ‘too dark’? That’s like saying that a sunny day in the desert is too hot. What did you think it was going to be like?
