Last night the 69th Annual Emmy Awards aired on CBS. Hosted by Stephen Colbert, the evening was full of laughs and several digs at our current POTUS. Big winners of the night included Big Little Lies and The Handmaid’s Tale. Another big winner for the evening was the HBO comedy Veep. The series won its second Emmy in a row for Best Comedy Series. Actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus won her sixth Emmy in a row for her portrayal of Selina Meyer.
Because of this awesome feat last night, Louis-Dreyfus holds the title for earning the most Emmy wins for one role. Louis Dreufys has been playing Selina since the show premiered in 2012 and has a win for each season of the popular series. She is now tied with actress Cloris Leachman for the most Emmy wins at 8. Louis-Dreyfus has two additional Emmys for her work on Seinfeld and The New Adventures of Old Christine.
This record was not the only one the Veep star has broken. Last year, she broke the same record for most consecutive wins. Louis-Dreyfus was previously tied with Candace Bergen and Mary Tyler Moore with four consecutive wins before taking home another statue at the 2016 ceremony.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus had a lot of competition in the category. She beat out Ellie Kemper, Tracee Ellis Ross, Allison Janney, Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Pamela Adlon. The Veep actress made sure to recognize these lovely ladies in her acceptance speech. She also mentioned the cast and crew of Veep.
