Sisu in Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
The 2020s began with Awkwafina taking more lead roles in animated films. The first was voicing Sisu in Raya and the Last Dragon. Sisu was the last surviving dragon in Kumandra, after concentrating her magic into a gem to rid Kumandra of the Drunn—mindless spirits that turn every living thing in their path to stone. Half a millennium later, the Kumandra are divided into five chiefdoms. When the Fang tribe tries to steal the gem, it causes a struggle that breaks it into five pieces. With the awakening of the Drunk, Princess Raya of the Heart tribe embarked on a journey to find Sisu to restore and protect her people.
Ms. Tarantula in The Bad Guys (2022)
DreamWorks Animation Studios’ The Bad Guys is one of Awkwafina’s highest-grossing animated movies. Awkwafina voiced Ms. Tarantula, a member of the criminal group of anthropomorphic animals. Although sarcastic and sharp-tongued, Ms. Tarantula is the group’s expert hacker tarantula. The Bad Guys grossed $250.4 million with a $69–80 million production budget.
Scuttle in The Little Mermaid (2023)
Awkwafina was also part of the voice cast of the 2023 live-action adaptation of the 1989 The Little Mermaid. Chump in Migration (2023)
Awkwafina had an exceptionally busy year in 2023, starring in five feature films. However, the Universal Pictures/Illumination animated adventure comedy Migration was her last movie of the year. In Migration, Awkwafina voiced Chump, the one-footed leader of the pigeon gang in New York City. Although not a central character, Awkwafina’s Chump was one of Migration’s memorable characters. Zhen in Kung Fu Panda 4 (2024)
Awkwafina began 2024 on a high note, joining the voice cast in the fourth installment in the Kung Fu Panda franchise, Kung Fu Panda 4. Awkwafina voices the secondary protagonist, Zhen, a corsac fox. Although introduced as a bandit trying to steal ancient weapons from the Jade Palace, Zhen later joins Po (Jack Black) to defeat the evil sorceress, the Chameleon (Viola Davis). Bubble IF in IF (2024)
In the John Krasinski-directed 2024 animated live-action/animated fantasy comedy IF, Awkwafina voices the Bubble IF.
