The ATX Television Festival, headlining a Battlestar Galactica cast and creator reunion, will happen in Austin, Texas, June 8 – 11 2017. The festival features premiers, screenings, script read-throughs, creator and cast reunions for many shows, panel discussions, and of course Q&As. True industry professionals will serve as panelists for gatherings of wannabes (such as this writer) and fans (such as all of us). Some of the panels will discuss the creative and production side such as the role of the showrunner, effective producer/director parings, and creating onscreen friendships. Other panels will include cast members and those discussions will be more fan centric.
What it’s about. This summer marks the sixth time the festival has been held. The ATX Television Festival celebrates the history of the medium, where it is today, as well as where TV is headed. The festival’s organizers have set it up to reach a 50/50 balance between fans and industry professionals (and those who want to work in the industry). So, if you want to hear the actors who brought your favorite characters to life discuss their arcs, this is the place for you. If you want hear producers, directors, writers, and behind the camera professionals discuss how TV programs are actually produced, this is also the place for you. If you’re curious about the pilots and premiers of upcoming new shows, this is also the place for you.
Why it’s important. Did I mention the Battlestar Galactica reunion scheduled to include creator Ronald D. Moore and cast members Edward James Olmos (Admiral Adama), Mary McDonnell (President Roslin), Katee Sackhoff (Starbuck), Tricia Helfer (Six), Grace Park (Boomer, Athena), James Callis (Baltar), Michael Hogan (Colonel Tigh), Michael Trucco (Sam Anders). It’s not the San Diego Comicon; there’s no cosplay; there aren’t any film studios or animation houses or comicbook companies. This is a festival solely dedicated to live-action TV. It’s focused. So, there are fewer distractions.
