Bravo’s Real Housewives Franchise Goes Global
It was only a matter of time before Bravo’s Real Housewives franchise expanded its horizons and ventured into the international arena. However, what we didn’t anticipate was the backlash that would follow the series’ first global foray. The Real Housewives of Athens, the first international extension of the Real Housewives brand, has stirred up quite a controversy in Greece.
Greek TV Critics Disapprove of the Show’s Lavishness
According to MSN Philippines News, the show has drawn the ire of TV critics in Greece for its portrayal of opulent spending and extravagant lifestyles, especially in light of the recent economic crisis that has plagued the country. A newspaper named Ta Nea expressed its disapproval, stating, “One wonders if the broadcasters realize that there are around a million unemployed in Greece at the moment. With the economic crisis…a reality show on lavishness and consumerism seems unlikely to catch on.”
Meet the Real Housewives of Athens
The six women featured in this installment include ex-models (and current TV presenters) Ioanna Soulioti and Annita Nathanail; ex-basketball player Orthoula Papadakou; fashion designer Joe Togu; actress Christina Papa; and stay-at-home mom Fofi Mastrokosta. Various newspapers from across the region have voiced their opinions on how the women’s luxurious way of life is a sad representation of the current state of events in the country. They argue that the show’s focus on opulence is inappropriate, given the high unemployment rates and the number of people out of work.
Comparing the Greek Housewives to Their American Counterparts
Here in America, the excessive spending of New Jersey Housewife Teresa Giudice has also drawn criticism from fans during the economic crisis. However, other Housewives, such as Orange County’s Alexis Bellino, haven’t faced as much backlash for living beyond their means as the Giudice family has. While the Greek critics have a valid reason for their dislike of The Real Housewives representing their country/city at the moment, is it really all that bad? After all, these women do have money to spend…
Is the Criticism Justified?
It’s worth considering whether the criticism against The Real Housewives of Athens is justified. On one hand, it’s understandable that the show’s portrayal of opulence and excess might be seen as insensitive in a country struggling with economic turmoil. On the other hand, the show is meant to be a form of entertainment, and it’s not uncommon for reality TV to showcase the lives of the rich and famous. Ultimately, it’s up to the viewers to decide whether they want to tune in and indulge in the lavish lifestyles of these women or not.
