Phish is not really a mainstream band, as their fame has been spread mostly by word of mouth, which is something you don’t hear about much these days. But they do have a loyal fan base which is amazing since they’ve taken a few breaks from one another. Their first was after about 15 years of being together. They split in 2000 and then got back together in 2002. Then they went silent again after announcing their last show, only to pop back up in 2009. Since then they’ve been performing on a regular basis. They haven’t changed their sound thankfully, which is a blend of funk, folk, country, jazz, blues, bluegrass, and several other styles. Needless to say they’re kind of an acquired taste, but like I said they do have big following.
If you’ve heard of them it was likely from someone that heard it from a friend of a friend and so on and so forth.
5. The Simpsons-Run Like An Antelope
They weren’t ENTIRELY mainstream, but Phish did manage to get out into the public a bit. Of course if word of mouth gets even close to some shows you know they’re going to pick up on it without hesitation. The Simpsons creator was never shy about pulling in new or just exciting guests to pep the show up a bit and include more talent to make it interesting.
4. Dawson’s Creek-Birds of a Feather
You kind of had to be into Dawson’s Creek to really watch it and understand what was going on at any certain moment. It was a staging ground for the careers of several of those that starred in it, such as James Vanderbeek, Joshua Jackson, Katie Holmes, and so on. But if you’ll notice as of now those actors are all still famous but they’ve taken kind of a back seat to the new generation.
3. Beavis and Butthead-Down With The Disease
There’s no duo that can make a video or a song sound inherently better than it might be like these two. Their lame insults and toilet humor tend to make any band sound better and gain a little bit of sympathy from people who otherwise wouldn’t really think about bands like Phish all that much. Plus Beavis and Butthead were like the IT couple during their rise to fame.
2. Phish-The Inlaw Josie Wales
It takes some doing but you can get into Phish if you’ve never heard them before. If they’re not your type of music that’s just fine since they don’t cater to everyone. They’re pretty comfortable in the style of music they’ve elected to play and aren’t bound to change anytime soon. This could be why so many people like them, they won’t sell out to make themselves more famous.
1. Scooby-Doo and the Loch Ness Monster-Back On The Train
With a few exceptions this seems to be the manner in which they’re added into a show most times, as a bit of the background that’s innocuous and not really seen as that important. If it works for them then so be it.
Phish is one of those bands that back in high school, in the 90’s I recall, was something that people thought was cool but wouldn’t go around talking about that often.
