Most films portray them as the heroes that they are and we’re fascinated with television series that highlight the stories of these men who risk their lives in the line of duty. Some of the shows are comedic and others are serious drama. Here are the top five firemen in the history of television.

Tommy Gavin

The Top Five Firemen in the History of Television

Fireman Tommy Gavin struggles with alcoholism and is haunted by images of friends who have died in the line of duty, but he’s still one of the best firefighters on television. Denis Leary played Gavin in the series “Rescue Me” that ran from 2004 through 2011. Regardless of how bad his personal life was, Tommy was the guy who pulled it together and showed strength and intestinal fortitude in getting his job done.

Sean Garrity

The Top Five Firemen in the History of Television

Another top firefighter from “Rescue Me” is Sean Garrity. He’s unforgettable because of his kind heart and willingness to put his life on the line to save others. He’s good at putting out fires, although he seems to be a little slow when it comes to fast thinking in his personal life. These three traits are what endeared him to viewers. Although not a fast thinker, he was brave and thoughtful.

Peter Mills

The Top Five Firemen in the History of Television

Peter is following along in his father’s career path by being a fireman. This line of work is in the blood. Peter is a solid character. He’s a down to earth family man and he acts like Dad at the firehouse, watching after all of the guys that work with him. Peter is determined, compassionate and serious about doing his job the right way. He is one of “Chicago Fire’s” finest.

Alex Taylor

The Top Five Firemen in the History of Television

Alex is a firefighter in the 6 season series “Third Watch.” She was a woman who grew up as a tomboy that worshiped her firefighter father. She took on the role of paramedic and firefighter and her character was well liked throughout her time on the series. Taylor was a caring person who dedicated herself to her work. Her time in the series was cut short as the character died in the fourth season, helping out another member of the team. This fixed her place in television history as one of the top firefighters.

Roy DeSoto

The Top Five Firemen in the History of Television

The hit television series “Emergency” was about emergency room hospital staff and the firefighters/EMTs that brought in patients from catastrophic events. Kevin Tighe played the role of Roy DeSots, firefighter and EMT. He and his partner John Gage, played by Randolph Mantooth were a team that gave their all to help the people who were in need. Roy is memorable because he was the quieter of the two, but he also seemed to have a great deal more common sense. He kept his impulsive partner in line and safe which makes Roy DeSoto one of the best and well-remembered firefighters in the history of television series.
