When I first saw the trailer for The Mummy I was pretty annoyed for one reason and one reason only: the title. Did they really have to do that? All I’m doing is conjuring up images of Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. Granted Weisz looked incredible in the original but come on. They really couldn’t have figured out something just a little better or more creative? But if you actually watch the trailer and forget about the title of the film, you actually see some pretty vintage Tom Cruise action movie stuff, and for that The Mummy might actually be worth seeing.
And might I just interrupt for a minute to say I’m pretty impressed that Cruise is 54 and still doing all his own stunts. Sure there are guys way older who do the same but it’s not like Cruise has been doing this for a few years. The guy’s been in action films for over 30 years now. Yes, Top Gun and Legend were made in 1986 and 1985 respectively and to my knowledge he was doing stunts back then (no he wasn’t flying planes but he was still doing stuff). The point I’m making is that it’s impressive and with a new Mission Impossible on the way, Cruise just keeps on going.
So back to The Mummy. Turns out there was one scene in particular that was pretty special. Cruise actually did the stunt in zero gravity. Cruise came up with the idea to perform the stunt awhile ago… either because it was part of the script and he didn’t want to use a green screen, or he simply said, “Let’s crash a plane in this movie because I wanna float in space.” Based on the director’s commentary, it was probably the latter.
“Tom said, ‘Yeah we’re gonna do it for real, we’re gonna get on a real plane and we’re gonna crash,’ and I thought, ‘This is just never gonna happen,’” director Alex Kurtzman said. Check out some of this scene. It’s pretty awesome.
