The Walking Dead 2.13 “Beside The Dying Fire” Comic-to-TV Comparison

The Walking Dead - Beside the Dying Fire

LORI’S REACTION TO SHANE AND CARL

AMC: In spite of earlier implying Rick’s need to kill Shane for their own protection, Lori violently recoils at Rick’s revelation that his killing Shane wasn’t solely self defense, but a desire for their conflict to be over. Additionally, she grows especially sick that Carl had a hand in shooting the zombified Shane, and Carl himself seems devastated by the fact that Rick killed Shane.

THE COMICS: There wasn’t much explaining Rick needed to do for Carl, who in the books was the one to shoot the living Shane in defense of his father, before Shane ever re-animated. Carl was understandably distraught at what he’d done, but never questioned his father’s actions. Similarly, Lori never objected to how things ended with Shane.

If anything, Lori and Carl’s reaction to Rick’s brutality is more reminiscent of Rick’s vicious beating of murderous prison inmate Thomas, and ultimate decisions to hang him.
