One way we’ve been able to keep ourselves satisfied in between MCU films is through ABC’s Agents of SHIELD. The show first came out in 2013, right in the beginning of MCU’s Phase Two. Season 6 of Agents has finally come, and fans have been more than ecstatic to get a chance to watch another season. Many character favorites on the TV show are just as beloved as the Marvel characters on film, so it’s not a surprise that fans theorize the TV world just as much as the films. So here are some of the best theories going around right now about Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD and its characters.
1. Phil Coulson is a Skrull
This one is a pretty heavy theory. It makes a lot of sense, especially after seeing the recent Captain Marvel movie. As a preview to the coming season 6 of the TV show, ABC released a teaser trailer at the beginning of the year. We know from the end of season 5 that the beloved director of the series was destined to die; and the way that season closed up, we were all sure that it was the end for Agent Phil Coulson. The teaser trailer for season 6 showed the team mourning Coulson’s death, but then, Coulson shows up. This article from Comicbook.com touches on how it could easily be time travel or some kind of quantum realm travel (now that it’s possible because of Endgame). But Coulson being a Skrull actually makes more sense than anything. The Coulson we’ve known all this time in the MCU, portrayed by none other than Clark Gregg, may have been a Skrull the entire time. We might actually be seeing the real Phil Coulson this time, and from what it looks like, they’re two completely different characters.
2. We’ll be seeing Thanos’ snap
According to an article on Hollywoodlife.com, the events of Agents season 6 will be happening post snap. It was a logistical decision on the part of the show’s creators due to possible time conflicts with the release of this year’s Endgame. Seeing as to how the teaser trailer turned out, it’s possible that we might actually see Thanos’ snap happen on television. We know that everything with Thanos around that time happens in Wakanda, but SHIELD has always had some kind of connection with the MCU films. While the creators confirm the departure from the MCU timeline, it doesn’t necessarily mean that we won’t see characters disappear at some point. It could very well happen at the end of the season, where it could be extremely dramatic. Otherwise, it could also happen mid-season, and we could see the team just try to cope with the loss or try to fix what happened much like what the Avengers did in the movies.
3. Deke is even more important than we thought
So first we thought that Deke was just another Lighthouse scavenger. Then we find out that he’s got a more developed character than we originally thought. After that, we slowly realized that Deke might actually be important. Soon enough, season 5 revealed that Deke is actually the future son of none other than our favorite genius duo–Fitz and Simmons. We saw quite an emotional season 5 given that the creators of the show thought it was going to be its last. Fitz and Simmons getting married was almost an omen that one of them was going to die. And Fitz did. But given the time travel factor introduced in the MCU, we very well know that being dead is not as final as it normally is. In season 5, Deke was supposed to have been wiped out after the timeline was fixed. However, the teaser trailer for season 6 shows Deke quite alive and standing. It’s probably reason to believe that his purpose for the show isn’t quite done yet. Are we going to see a Daisy and Duke affair this season? Some fan theories have suggested so.
4. We’re going to explore the multiverse
When you’ve explored so many avenues of universal life, there’s really only a few ways you could still go. The multiverse has already been introduced in the MCU through the upcoming Spiderman: Far From Home trailer. Now, with the introduction of Agent Coulson’s new role in the show, suffice it to say some are assuming that he’s coming from an entirely other universe just as this IGN.com article suggests. There’s a good possibility that the team might be traveling to another universe this season. The trailer made it seem like Coulson is the bad guy this time around, but we’ve learned from previous seasons that characters on this show aren’t always who they seem to be. We’re sure the team will somehow figure out a way to travel into an entirely different universe, but they wouldn’t be able to do it without a complete Fitz-Simmons team. That means we’d have to find Fitz floating in space first, and then everyone else can move on along. Maybe Fitz-Simmons might have to find another Coulson someplace else–one that we’ll actually like.
5. We’re going to lose someone from the team
It always seems like death is the safest bet in the MCU. Someone always ends up dying somehow, and of course, it’s usually going to be a favorite character. Deke actor Jeff Ward has been promoted to series regular this season, and that might very well mean that he’s out to replace another series regular soon. Fans have speculations as to who it could be, and majority votes towards just a couple of characters. We surely can’t lose Daisy because many story lines revolve around her. Fitz-Simmons are far too invested in the series, and they absolutely can’t be separated ever again. We just saw Coulson die, and somehow he’s alive again. Agent May is still the best fighter in the team–and she doesn’t need superpowers to be it. So Mack and Elena are the only ones left. Mack has assumed the Director position, and that might put him in a vulnerable position. Elena, as useful as she might be in certain situations, doesn’t seem to be as emotionally tied to the show as the other characters. We’re betting on losing one of those two, but we really hope we don’t have to.
