Fifteen years ago Mean Girls became a huge part of pop culture and today the Brewers are bringing it back in a parody that’s worth talking about apparently since it seems to be something of a sensation that a lot of people find absolutely comical. The whole thing is set up much like the cafeteria scene in Mean Girls when the most popular trio meets Cady, and the manner in which the Brewers make this work is simply hilarious not only because it hearkens back to the movie, but because in real life the situation is so inherently comical that you find yourself wondering ‘who does this?’.
As much as Mean Girls is a parody of high school life, and it is, don’t kid yourself, the Brewers were willing to show just how funny it can be from a another angle and managed to show people just what it could look like if a bunch of grown men decided to act in the same manner. How a person takes it is all up to them so in all honesty if you’re an alt-right extremist or a hardcore feminist or even a far-left extremist you might find it funny, insulting, patronizing, or any other word you want to use to describe it from your perspective. The main point of course is that it’s pretty funny and to be more precise it’s something that might have been popular back in the day but these days is less than acceptable. There might be a few schools that still see this practice in the lunch room since the high school hierarchies are still in full swing and don’t seem bound to anywhere any time soon, but treating people like people at any age is still something you might find is more amenable in this day and age since being overly criticized for being seen as a bigot or a fake individual is a fate that a lot of people seem more than willing to avoid.

The social scene in any group is bound to section itself off into various factions but the dynamic that exists between them these days does tend to vary from school to school. So quite honestly this kind of thing does happen, and it can even happen in a crowd of young men or men, but the whole clique thing that has existed for so long is a laughable thing these days and is something that you can’t help but think is a remnant of an era when being cool meant being absolutely miserable with who you are since it also meant living up to a ridiculous societal standard that one helps propagate by giving into the demands of the people around them. Mean Girls was something of a phenomenon since it was one of those movies that showed us how comical and overall real our lives can be and usually are when we give into the hype and the idea that there are groups that are actually better than others.
Choices that we make in life to be a part of the ‘in’ crowd or just go off on our own and do our own thing tend to be the choices that we’re most criticized for since they show just where our heads are at and who we want to be like when it comes to fitting in. The fact that we can laugh at stuff like this when it’s parodied means that fitting in is still fairly important, but the idea of fitting in because of what someone else wants from us is kind of ridiculous, not to mention unrealistic. No matter how much people seem to follow certain trends and live their lives according to what this or that person said or did, the truth of it is that we’re usually bound by choices rather than the results of those choices, and there’s almost never a moment when we can’t choose a different path and find another way to go. Mean Girls seems to indicate that finding that path isn’t the hard part, it’s taking the path that leads away from what society wants, the ability to be seen as a part of the ‘in’ crowd, that’s truly difficult.
Parodies are important since they poke fun at situations in life, and in cinema, that seem kind of silly and worth the attention they’re given since from the standpoint of various individuals it could be true to life or it could be a comical jab at what real life is actually like. In other words the comedy of the situation is something that we enjoy laughing at since otherwise it seems like the situation would be too intense, too depressing, and way too indicative of giving into a society that says it values personal freedom when in truth it wants conformity. But all in all the parody is just funny.
