Interracial couples in sitcoms aren’t all that new but they have been more widely accepted in the last few decades as the will of the audience and what they’ll accept has changed. In many ways this should have never been something that raised eyebrows or even bothered to be noticed save for what we see and how they seem to fit together. But given the mindset of many within the nation concerning what’s okay and what’s not okay when it comes to race there are still those that believe that interracial couples are a problem and not a solution. Truthfully it’s better to just admit that people will be people and find who they want to spend their lives with. This should extend to sitcom couples as well and it’s been seen to do so over the years as it’s become more and more prominent in TV.
Here are some of the most memorable interracial couples on TV throughout the years.
5. I Love Lucy – Lucy and Ricky
It seems that comedy is one of the best mediums to use when it comes to interracial couples on TV since it not only offers the chance at drama occasionally but it allows them to play on their differences a lot of times and at least try to entertain the people. In I Love Lucy there were times when no one could understand Ricky when he slipped into his native language and then even when he was speaking English thanks to his accent. But it was funny because a lot of times when he became less than understandable it meant that he was good and flustered and Lucy was one of the main reasons.
4. My Name is Earl – Joy and Darnell
The strangest thing about this relationship is that Joy is about as psychopathic as you can get without being a killer, while Crab Man, or Darnell, is one of the most chill individuals on the planet. He has to actively try to be jerk and most times he doesn’t pull it off all that well. And at the same time he’s sleeping with his wife, he’s still good friends with her ex, Earl, though Earl and Joy can just barely stand each other most times. It’s a very screwy situation but in the show it seems to work out for everyone since in important times they all get together and work things out in a strangely amicable fashion.
3. The Jeffersons – Tom and Helen
This was in a time when the mere mention of being married to a person of a different color was enough to at least get the raised eyebrows and shocked stares from many people that you might expect of the era. Nowadays some people still pause and wonder just what’s going through the minds of those in the relationship, but there’s a lot more acceptance by many. In this era it was still something you didn’t see that often and it was looked at with something close to disdain by some. But in truth it worked, and it was proven as the show continued to roll on and Tom and Helen were seen as one of the best couples on TV.
2. Modern Family – Jay and Gloria
Seeing how Jay is and how he thinks it’s kind of hard to see him with Gloria all the time, but for some reason it works and she’s one of the funnier people on the show. Jay is the stubborn and vain old man that thinks he’s just awesome while Gloria is the vain younger woman that dotes on her son too much and doesn’t think that she has many, if any, faults. Of course they both recognize that they do have failings in their calmer moments, but those times of reflection are few and far between since they enjoy being on top of any situation and getting their way whenever they can. It’d be a hectic household to live in.
1. Shameless – Veronica and Kevin

They have a very strange sex life and both of them have massive issues in their lives that they just don’t seem to be able to take care of and put behind them that easily, but they’re definitely one of the power couples that have emerged throughout the years. Kevin and Veronica are not perfect by any means but they do have something together that is far better than they could be alone. Their whole dynamic is one that doesn’t exactly lean towards weakness or even a tolerance for anything other than the truth and the struggle they continually go through to survive and to get along. But all in all they belong with each other because they can tolerate one another, and in doing so are about the only ones that can really love one another.
Couples on TV aren’t bound by color, they’re bound by compatibility.
