Fifty years, that’s how long the band Rush has managed to last until just this year when they decided to disband. Like most other groups they’ve been through a lot in their careers but the show is pretty much over it seems unless someone plans a reunion somewhere down the road. Fans would no doubt line up the moment they heard such a thing was happening since Rush has been one of the most influential bands throughout the last five decades since they began. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013 and only five years later have decided that it’s time to put the instruments down, at least when it comes to recording. You never know, one of them might get their wind up and decide that it was premature to say let’s stop, but that’s not bound to happen it sounds like.
Here are a couple of their best songs as heard in movies and TV.
5. That’s My Boy – Limelight
Adam Sandler has been known for playing outlandish characters for much of his career, but this one really takes the cake. Donny is a guy that as a young boy was seduced by his teacher and managed to get her pregnant. While his father wasn’t willing to help much with the raising of his own kid Donny was left to his own devices and he screwed things up pretty badly since he was still a kid himself. But as his son grew up and grew apart from him Donny kind of just stayed the way he was, never fully growing into a stable human being. The movie isn’t one of the best but it’s definitely a good representation of the music.
4. Family Guy – Tom Sawyer
Family Guy is the kind of show that lives to surprise the viewers since the idea is that people never really know what’s coming and will be amazed, shocked, or even disgusted at what the show has to offer. Sometimes it’s all three in equal measure since the program is the type that pushes boundaries in a rather strange way and doesn’t really look ahead, or behind, to see if they’re really bothering anyone with their continued antics and off-color humor that tends to offend a lot of people but makes even more people laugh. One thing you need to remember about this show is that it’s a cartoon, none of it is meant to be taken seriously.
3. I Love You Man – Tom Sawyer
Sometimes friends that you meet and share only a passing interest with are not always the best friends. But Sydney means well and he does manage to help Peter when he really needs it. The manner in which he goes about it however is just kind of strange and off-putting since he kind of goes all out and gets extremely weird in the process. But hey, if a guy is really trying to impress someone there are times when he goes a little nuts and doesn’t really think about the impact of what he’s doing. Some might say that women don’t go this far and they might be right, which could explain a lot about relationships.
2. Fanboys – Limelight
There is nothing quite like a fanboy. Some people might berate and deride them, others might actually admire them. But when a group of former friends go on a trip to infiltrate Skywalker Ranch and obtain a copy of The Phantom Menace so that their friend, who is terminally ill, can watch it before he dies, you can just imagine that the story would take them through a crazy ride that involves getting in a fight with Trekkies and having their manhood called into question repeatedly since as great as Star Wars is, to a lot of people it’s entertainment. To fanboys however, it’s a way of life.
1. The Waterboy – Tom Sawyer
Bobby starts out as kind of a pathetic character that gets picked on, put down, and basically roughed up on a regular basis since he’s been conditioned not to fight back. His position as a waterboy is terminated when the coach he’s been working under kicks him out without hesitation and he has to find a new spot that will accept him. The position he finds is with a team that hasn’t won a game in years, and treats him just as badly as the team he came from, but there’s one difference, his coach tells him it’s okay to fight back. With that in mind Bobby finds a purpose for his life as he discovers that his ‘tackling fuel’, the taunts and insults he’s heard all his life, are the key to allowing him to vent his frustration and to become a terror on the football field that no one can stand up to.
Rush was a group that simply lit the stage up. ‘Nuff said.
